Just starting to workout again

I join the gym 2 weeks ago and feel a little confused and lost. I dont have the money for a personal trainer and so far all I have been doing is cardio on the treadmill at 3 mph or the stationary bike for 30 minutes.  Can anyone recommend what machines to use to tone and build some muscle so that I can burn more calories resting.

I would suggest that you do what's called compound exercises where you work multiple muscle groups - so the lat pulldown, seated row for upper body is good.

Squats and leg press for lower body are great beginner choices, I think,

*most* gyms offer their newbies free *training* on all the equipment.  the trainer advises you on which equipment works what and your form etc.  ask the gym if this service is available.

I thought as a courtesy of you joining that they are surpose to show you around, how to use the equipment, and tell you what part of the body it works. 
When I first started going to gym. I watched others and learnt how to use the equipment on my own. I still till this day watch to see what types of workout others are doing and I try some of them. I lift free weights and is usually the only female lifting weights with the knuckle heads.
