Yep - it's a piggyback...... What post WLS food approach did YOU have in mind???

Curious question - what or how did you plan/expect your approach to food to change post WLS?

did you expect to NEVER eat some things?
did you expect SOME things to ALWAYS make you sick?
did you plan to leverage WLS as a tool to recraft your habits?
did you expect WLS to 'make' you eat better?

Just wondering - as it seems some of us look to 'test' the limits of the surgery - as if the boundary doesn't exist physically, we look to cross it periodically (i.e. if you don't dump, you indulge in sweets)

Also - newbie to old head - were you a 'by the book and never a crook' in the beginning?  Meaning - did you follow your doc's orders to the LETTER?  no matter what?

As for me - I can say that WLS was a way for me to 'detox' off my cravings and try to learn a different way to eat, different approach.  I can pretty much eat whatever I want - but there are some things i DO NOT eat at all - not cause I can't - but because I SHOULDN'T.  And for my first several months, I stayed on point for fear of death or complication.  Especially the first 2-3 mos.

Seriously I thought that this would be a quick fix.  No lie; just being naive and telling the truth and shaming the devil.  Never once thought about the mental (I should have paid more attention to my mom after wls).

did you expect to NEVER eat some things?
I never thought I would eat meat again.  Period.  But I still can't eat a lot of red meat.  OH how I miss steak!!

did you expect SOME things to ALWAYS make you sick?
No I didn't expect some things to make me sick; especially things I am allowed to eat; such as eggs.  Anyway I cook the egg it makes me nauseous and I have to take a nexium to even get through it.

did you plan to leverage WLS as a tool to recraft your habits?
No but I have started some old habits that I will try to nip in the bud

did you expect WLS to 'make' you eat better?
Yes I told you I was naive.  Not thinking that I had to work on the eating better to make me lose the weight

Also - newbie to old head - were you a 'by the book and never a crook' in the beginning?  Meaning - did you follow your doc's orders to the LETTER?  no matter what?
I was a by the book and never crook my first year.  And whatever I dumped on I didn't eat until after I was a year out; such as the meat and the eggs.

Eggs, huh?  LOL!  I got my issues too - and I STILL have moments when something I have been SHOVELING down all of a sudden turns my stomach without ANY warning - I HATE that!!!!

not trying to be messy - I'd like to show the range of opinions on the subject so that it's understood no one is trying to jump on anyone.

If you understand the range of experiences here - you can understand the responses.

No mess - just discussion.

did you expect to NEVER eat some things?
I did...I didn't think that I would be able to ever have rice or bread again.

did you expect SOME things to ALWAYS make you sick?
Yes. Still waiting for something to always make me sick.  It has not happened yet.

did you plan to leverage WLS as a tool to recraft your habits?
I did plan to use WLS as tool to recraft my habits and it has worked.  It does not work when the carb monster is lurking.

did you expect WLS to 'make' you eat better?
No.  I knew it was a tool and that I should follow the rules if I expected to maximize my weight loss potential.

I was a by the book person for 7 months and I lost most of my weight during this time and I started testing the waters and that is where I went wrong.  I have had natural hell ever since trying to get to my personal goal of 180-190.

My advice to any newbie, PLEASE follow the rules...you will regret it later if you don't.

Let me answer this quickly before Master come and get me!

I was told by my surgeon that I would never be able to eat the skin on chicken or sweets again.  That scared me because I absolutely love fried chicken!

I was on all liquids for the first 3 weeks following surgery and pretty much followed it to the "T".  I did "cheat" a little by trying to put some spaghetti and meatballs in the blender and turn it into a liquid but it made me sick as a dog.   I went almost an entire year without eating beef or pork and still don't eat much of it now because it just doesn't go down very well.  Like many others, I am now lactose intolerant so ice cream, milkshakes, cereal and milk....etc are no longer part of my diet.  That was my "detox" program from those foods.

Bottom line:  Today, I can pretty much eat whatever I want but I have lost the taste and desire for a whole lot of stuff and don't even feel tempted to indulge in them.  This surgery and the early years allowed me the opportunity to form a new relationship with food and  now I have to use my head more than my stomach to make smart food choices.
