How Blacks Spend Money

EDITED with color, caps and bold for Clarity for  the "rare" among us. QUOTE of the Day: When You Argue with a Fool, then there are TWO Fools Arguing.

QUESTIONS TO BE GENERALLY RESPONED TO or WHATEVER FEELS GOOD TO YOU:
(1) How do you prioritize what material things are important to have in your life and why?
Basically, how do you spend your hard earned money

(2) Is the way we spend and handle money influenced by how we were reared? If so, can we change for the better or accentuate the positive?

Of course the homeownership stats are terrible for AA (see: http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0883976.html),  credit ratings are bad ( see: http://blog.light-of-reason.com/archive/credit-scores-used-to-deny-african-americans-access-to-financial-services/)...but we (a lot of AA=some people I know or have counseled) seem to be able to get that real nice car, or flashy bling, or have an over-flowing closet full of clothes (probably hundreds of dollars worth that won't ever be worn), or buy the best liquors...  Now, trust me, I have nothing against some of these things in moderation, and I enjoy a bit of Corvoisier VSOP or XO now and then; but I also know that cars, clothes, liquor... are for the dung heap eventually.

I used to be COO for a Company that advised people on their financial affairs. One of our rules in advising was, "Pay Yourself First!" That means when you make your budget (wkly, mnly, yrly) you place SAVINGS along side the Mandatory Bills; also look at homeownership as a right, not a priviledge (people will go all out to get, keep and defend a Right).

Example of things I do to keep more of My HARD EARNED Money or Save it for Life Affirming things (like Vacations, Plastic Surgery...)
Buy my coffee from Gevalia (best coffee and green teas in the world to me) delivered 4 times per year. $ 120.00   VS I Used to spend $2.50+ per day on morning beverage=$650 per year minimallyTake my lunch to work   VS  Spending $3.00+ per day=$750 per year minimally.

I remember the first year I did these 2 things without fail for a year, set that money aside in an account, I had over $1500, been a believer every since!

Good points.  In better years, (not last year) Whenever I made a purchase, I would pay with a bill and toss the change in a huge coffee can once I got home.  Every 3 months, I'd take it to the bank.  I wound up with almost $1000 just from spare change at the end of the year.

Life is not about making it through the storm....but learning how to dance in the rain.

Good idea, we have "change" lying all around the place...I think I had better put it all in one place. Thanks for reminding me.

I know you're kidding? That actually works for some people. I don't have a problem with someone having to come back to their parents to regroup or staying to get on your feet...but dang, what type of  " thinker"  gives up a home or independent living for a car.

A Side Bar: When I talk with students in mentoring, I always ask them, "What makes best sense, buying a new car after HS Graduation for 16K, or if necessary taking out a Fed Loan for 10K for college." Many say, "Give Me the car", so I say, you are probably giving up $2 million dollars over the next 40-50 yrs minimally to buy something that when you drive it off the lot and brought it back in 30 days to sell, the same Dealer would not buy it back for 14K. An education is like Real Estate, it Appreciates in value over time, it's an investment in yourself.
