New Post-op Tip of The Day

Today's tip is a personal choice . I'm talking about whether you should wear a medical id bracelet. Some people believe in wearing them and some people don't, the choice is up to you.

I wear a medical id bracelet for 2 reasons: 1) I have a seizure disorder and can be found unconcious after a seizure and can't speak for myself  2) We have some special needs as wls patients.

My medical id bracelet states: Gastric Bypass RNY
                                                       No NG Tube W/O Scope
                                                       No NSAIDS No Sugars
                                                       See Wallet Card

My wallet card has my surgeons name and # and my pcp name and # my hubby's name and #, my allergies to meds and other illnesses that I have, such as my seizures.

As I said, this is a personal decision but I don't want to risk being in an accident and they have to put a tube in my throat and ruin my pouch or if I'm unconcious and they start an IV with glucose/ sugar in it. I've been told by medical personnel that the medical alert bracelets that look like jewelry may not be found immediately because it looks like a regular piece of jewelry. I wear a regular stainless steel bracelet and only get asked about it when I'm getting medical tests or in the hospital.

I have no idea about the Lapband, DS or VSG so maybe those people will give their opinion on this matter.

I don't wear one, more likely should.  However as far as having one due to having the lapband, I really cant think of a reason why I would need one, but you got me thinking now.

Question for you, just curious.  Why do you have No NSAIDS? I am told that the No NSAIDS is for a long term of taking them (I could be wrong) but my thinking is in a emergency, I want them to use what ever the heck is going to work on my pain the fastest and since it will (if I am lucky) be a short time, they shouldn't hurt me, but then again, I could be thinking all wrong.

Funny story: When I was first diagnose with diabetics, I wore one, now mind you, I did not know that you have to engraved what is wrong with you on it. So I was proudly wearing my bracelet thinking I was good to go. (I thought they had a different one for each ailment, color coded, and the red indicated that I had diabetics).

Came to work one day, sitting at my desk, this lady came by, flip my bracelet over and said, what is wrong with you, it doesn't say anything, I was thinking she was being funny, I said...well the medical folks will know and that is all that counts, only later did I learn that in fact it really didn't tell medical folks a darn thing. I was so naive ok, I was just dumb.  So my tip is don't be like me, wearing it like a piece of jewelry when it not serving the correct purpose.

Nope RNYers can't ever take NSAIDS becuase of the stoma and ulcers. All other WLS with a fully functioning stomach are fine.

Hey Laverne, I had LapBand as well.

The wallet card that I received from my surgeon says

Special Medical Information
Gastric LapBand: Use caution with NG Tube, No NSAIDS

I never really paid attention to it.  I need to check with him and see why it says No NSAIDS.

I have no NSAIDS on mine because I couldn't take them before surgery due them messing up my stomach. I have a pain disorder and was prescribed ibuprofen 800 like they were candy and it just ruined my stomach. I guess I could put that on my wallet part because if I'm in a lot of pain I would want anything at that time.  lol  Thanks for the input because I know that Lapbanders , DS and VSG patients have different rules than the RNY patients.

I do see some DSers that have a tag. Lemme check with one and see what thier tag says. Maybe if Tiffany made one I'd get it, but the other ones clash with my ensemble lol! I am going to get a wallet card though.

Howdy,
I just want to say that NSAIDS may be taken. My surgeon wrote a script for Naproxen-EC which is a specially coated Naproxen that can only be prescribed and dispensed by a Pharmacist. For many insurances it does require pre-authorization, but once done there are no future problems with getting it. This is good for those who have pain issues and bad menstrual cramps.

After banding I took the Naproxen EC just fine for 2 years with no pouch problems.

This is a good idea.  But I have a question...why should it read No NG Tube W/O Scope or No NG tube with scope??  My mother has been getting on me about putting my dr's info in my wallet along with medicines I take.  I need to listen!!

The No NG tube w/o scope is to protect your pouch. If you can't speak for yourself and medical personnel put in a ng tube blindly they might go too far and rip your pouch because they think you have a regular stomach.  That is very important  for them to know so they won't cause more problems instead of helping.
