Does CLEAR FASTING keep POUCH smaller ? 1 wk vs. 3 weeks

Hi,
I'm hoping the seasoned or more educated or experienced can answer this question for me.  My doctor told me to clear fast around 10 days.  I noticed some doctors have their patients to do the  clear fast 2 weeks or 3 weeks.  My doctor also said that the clear fast is to help keep the pouch tight while it heals and the longer you refrain from putting food in it the better it forms and helps your restriction down the line (my translation).

What do you think of this?  The reason i ask is; I have heard people on this board that go right into pureed foods.  So does it depend on the person, OR the longer you clear fast the better your chances on the back end of losing more weight.  OR one doesn't guarantee the other its' a doctors preference. ?

THANKS FOR HELPING ME SORT THIS OUT. I'M 6 days out and clear fasting.

Trying to figure out how to reverse this weight gain.

Wow, that is a long time. But then again maybe not, I very distinctly remember being just plain scared to eat for a while! Have you checked on here for your surgeon's board and asked some of his other patients? I only say that because for every 500 people on OH you're going to have 497 sets of instructions. Surgeons vary on their post op instructions.

Hello CC

I did well on Cahill's diet. Don't pay any attention to what others are doing. Please do not think I'm giving you a hard time.  My surgery twin's diet was more advanced than mine, but I stuck to it. You really shouldn't feel any hunger at this time. Maybe it the particular flavors or textures that you miss. Want a crunch, chew on some ice. Want something salty, sip on some broth.

* 100% fruit juice - no sugar added
* Sugar-free beverages such as Crystal Light, Diet V-8 Splash, Propel or Diet Snapple
* Decaffeneineated unsweetened tea
* Sugar-free popsicles
* Low sodium broth
* Sugar free jello

Straight from "our" doctor's diet notes......

You have undergone a procedure which leaves your stomach and digestive tract highly sensitive to foods, odors and tastes. Each person who begins on the journey of progressing his or her diet will have different and unique experience.

There are two purposes for these guidelines. First, adequate time must be allotted for your stomach and intestines to heal. Advancing the diet too quickly can compromise the healing process, resulting in complications. Secondly, the pouch is vulnerable to stretching during the first few weeks after surgery. Take time to experiment with the "new" feeling of fullness to avoid overeating.

My diet was similar to Wonka's ......I was too scared of hurting my pouch to try anything else...plus I wasnt real hungry that first month so I did fine with the liquids.

Wonka,
THanks much, I have a thick skin, feel free to kick me in the butt anytime.  I mean it!!    I have some internal belly pain, but I'm ok with the diet. I'm not really eating a lot, popsicles, broth very little, water with Crystal Light which I'm hardly drinking/  Mostly popsicles and ice chips. I have intense diarrhea, post-op tomorrow.

I can't have jello - you're lucky. Tony said NO No. lol.

I was asking a different question and I should have posed it differently.
God Bless,
please stay in touch you are a gem

sorry for this post, ..

THANK YOU ALL FOR ANSWERING ME. i MUST HAVE MIS-REPRESENTED MY QUESTION. I AM FINE WITH MY DIET, I had to intentions of undercutting my doctors orders etc.

  I am doing research for the future and I WAS ATTEMPTING TO find out what makes doctors, vary on diets pre-op and post op and if there was a correlation between  the pouch.

it was just a question.
Thank you all so much.

Chicago Candy why are you questioning your surgeons rules??? If someone told you differently would you do what they suggested over what the man that just cut on you did???  Everybody is not the same and with different surgeons come different rules.

SIX DAYS OUT???!!!

Do what you were told and you'll be aiight.

*Whispering  what's good for the goose ain't good for the damn gander, OH SHEILA!!!*

Once again follow Cahill's orders and YOU will be fine.

Good luck

I was just discussing this w/ a friend. My Surgeon told me that also and I also saw it on Discovery Health.  I can honestly say that I believe it, not so much the clear fasting aspect of it but the fact that you take it easy on your pouch and give it time to heal.  I truly think this is evident by how quickly the newer postops seem to be regaining versus the older postops.  Just read some of the posts on baf regarding what folks are eating as newer postops.  Sometimes I'm like wow!

My surgeon had me do 10 days of clear liquids then a few weeks of a full liquid/puree diet.  I don't know if it keeps the pouch tight ot not.  I'm seeing a lot of the new post ops with a similar diet.  You're not alone.
