To all my Spiritual/Believing folks, tell me what you feel.
He made the argument, "what if God just intended for you to be fat"?
And when did God whisper in his ear HIS intentions for your life?
Maybe your associate is unaware that many more people die from the complications of morbid obesity than from weight loss surgery.
As I see it, the problem with his whole argument is that he is not looking at morbid obesity as a serious medical issue. It seems as if he considers weight loss surgery a cosmetic procedure and that people who have it are doing so just for the sake of appearance - very judgemental and uninformed. There is also the messed up notion that obesity is caused by laziness and a lack of willpower. If I had a dollar for every time I tried to starve myself thin on some diet, I'd have a nice little nest egg. I would not try to convince anyone to have this surgery. It is a serious life altering thing, but it was the right choice for me. I had a few complications (anemia and gall bladder removal) but I would do it all over again. It was a blessing to me. IN MY HEART I can honestly say it saved me from living a miserable life.
Morbid obesity is a very complicated disease. Although scientists are learning more all the time, there is still a lot that they don't understand about it. I remember when I was in school they taught us how fat cells store extra body fat, but no one knew about the hormones and other chemicals in them.
Hypothetical situation - what if your associate were diagonsed with a heart defect that had a significantly negative impact on his quality of life, but it could be surgically repaired. How do you think he would respond if you suggested that God might just intend for him to just live with it?
We are commanded to love God, love others and to love ourselves. (Matthew 22:36-40)
Taking care of your health is one of the most loving things you can do for yourself and will help to insure that you will be around for those who care about you. Only you can make the choice as to what is the best way for you to accomplish that. It's your body and you have to live in it.
There is risk with any surgery so make informed decisions. Do your research on all the different procedures available and find out all you can about your surgeon and the facility where you will have it done. Pray about it and ask God to reveal to you anything else you need to know, then be at peace with whatever you decide.
