How do you respond to these comments? You're taking the easy way out? Is it? I don't feel like I'm taking the easy way out. Please advise.

You will get this comment often.  I rarely get my feathers ruffled but this comment happens to be one of my biggest pet peeves.  I have learned that people are misinformed about WLS and I just let it roll off and not say anything.

If this is the easy way out, then I am glad that I have the sense to take the easy way out...I would not dig a hole with a spoon when I can use a shovel even though the end result would be the same.

Love it LaVerne.  FYI, this statement will be plagiarized.

Not only have I heard it a million times...I was guilty of saying it too...

I thought it till I had the surgery....man was I wrong!

Depending on who is saying it to me, I tell them this is just a tool...kinda like giving us a head start to WL.....it's seems so easy at first.

I admit Kim I have said the same exact thing and sometimes still do.

It is EASY the first eighteen months the HARD part comes 2 years or so later when you have to work to keep it off.

I haven't actually had to address this issue yet but I think that I would ignore the comment if it's just ignorance.  In another case I would say "easy.....it is not."   I think the proper term is the risky way out.  There's nothing easy 'bout going thru surgery.

I tell very few people that I have had WLS because I don't want to hear negative comments , the first 2 months where the worst 2 mos of my life so it certainly wasn't the easy way out for me but I must admit that I feel like I'm living on easy street  now because I don't exercise and never have and it's a struggle everyday to keep from losing more weight and I feel guilty when see how others are busting there butts exercising just to keep the weight off.

Here's the response I gave: "Uh, jackass.  How is being administered anaesthesia, going under the knife, risking possible infection AND death on the table, facing possible physical and emotional side-effect the EASY WAY OUT???"

Seems to me that the knuckleheads who say such assinine things a)never did the research as to what all of this REALLY entails or b)are "healthy" and never HAD to even CONSIDER this means.

Hershey, tell those fools to do some research before they open the big fat mouths to criticize your choice.  Or, you could tell them to go to hell.  The choice is yours.    :)

eta: not for nothing, but I really HATE ignorant fuggin' people.  ok. i'm off my soapbox.
