Hi Ya'll...

Hey...is anyone else dealing with low blood sugar levels after WLS???

When I was at 330 plus...I was taking meds for "sugar" but within a few days after surgery...I've never again taken any more meds.  But recently I've been feeling weak and lathargic (sp?).

I took my readings one day last week...because I wasn't feeling well and it said..."27"...I've never had a reading that low before.  My meter flashed..."DANGER CALL DOCTOR"......(OK...maybe that isn't funny).

I took my readings a couple of minutes ago and it was "57"...and I can feel it dropping so I'm getting ready to eat something.

Anyone else out there experiencing/experienced this low blood sugar issue???

Yes, I get the hypoglycemic episodes every now and then.  It is such a freaky feeling.  I try to keep juice or hard candy around to reverse it quickly.

Hey Doug, yes I had an incident where I had to go to the hospital, about 2 months ago.  I was driving and became too weak to drive, called my son to come get me.  He took me the hospital for checkup, they keep me for 3 days, my sugar level had become too low...below 40.  I had been eating candy for weeks, the doctor said I had been keeping it at that level by eating the sweets.  They gave me something, by IV for several days to get it to normal again, sorry I can't remember what.  You REALLY need to contact your doctor.

Do you ever go to the Q&A Board?  I use it alot to research. I have found lots of helpful info.  Take care of yourself.

Yes, this happens to me from time to time. I find it doesn't happen AS MUCH if I eat about every 3hrs or so...not full out meals, mind you, maybe just some protein with a bit of carbs, or sometimes even if it's just protein. WLSers often have issues with reactive hypoglycemia. Don't know enough to explain it to you, but I see people on OH talk about it often. Google it.

I have problems with it off and on doug usually eating something sweet or something thats heavy in carbs help.    You can also buy the pocket packs of gloucouse tabs from the pharmacy, walmart and target.    You should schedule an appoint with the doctor too ...he/she may want you to see a nutrionist too.

Hi Doug,
I have non-diabetic hypogycemia. Yeah you were in danger at 27 cause a reading of 32 almost did me in a few years back.

My Dr. has always told me to eat small meals or healthy snacks every few hours. I don't seem to be bothered with it as much as I was a few years ago, but the small meals really worked.

Low blood sugar isn't fun at all.

yeah i think i have been feeling like that a few times.  I don't have a machine to check my blood sugar, but i think that is what it was...i feel funny, break out into a sweat and if i eat something sweet, it gets a lil better....maybe i need to get me a machine to check it every now and then.
