Add me to the vicariously living group.  I volunteer for American Cancer Society and today we had a health fair for the kickoff for Relay for Life.  My body is sore from simply standing and moving all day; of course I had enough coffee to send off a small fleet but on the plus side...I got in all my protein!

I was going to go out but it would mean driving to Dallas so it is me and the couch tonight.

Well you have a good excuse for staying in the house. What did you have to do at the health fair?

I am actually on the committee for Relay for Life - Fort Worth so we all took a booth to man, or find someone else too, get the professionals and all the materials to educate.  I work for a derma company so I took the Skin Cancer Prevention booth and had a ball.

I procured information from the American Cancer Society and the Skin Cancer Foundation and samples from my company and had a really good time telling people how they should take care of their skin and how to identify growths that may be abnormal.  The pink people looked surprised that I was so knowledgeable (like my behind can't read, lol).  We also performed a mini-relay event and my being a big ham was one of the commentators.  I think a good time was had by all....although I have tons of samples left (guess who is so NOT getting a tan this summer.)

I am sorry to go on and on but I get really geeked about my volunteer work.  If I could work up half this much entusiasm for my day job; I would probably be a VP somewhere! LOL

Lemme ask you a question. I can't wait to see my lab results for my 3 month checkup. I actually didn't get to see my pre-op labs but I wanted to see what my D levels look like pre op also before supplementation. I've read lots of articles about how many have low D levels, these were not WLS patients but normies. I stay outside for work and read that you do absorb vit D from the sun. I'm wondering how my D levels will fare.

What do you think about absorbing vit D in through the skin?

Oh and I usually wear spf 15 moisterizer on my face in the summer. Should I increase that? I love my summer tan!

Actually vitamin d analogs were my graduate thesis so this I can handle.  Yes vitamin d is produced when the skin is exposed to UVB rays, however during the winter the liver is the primary source of vitamin d production.  Eating winter seasonal fruit and veggies help with this as well.

The FDA recommends at least an SPF 30 to be a sunscreen so SPF 15 while providing protection is minimal but probably effective if someone's exposure is minimal as well.  Moisturizers in with SPF 15 are probably good for winter use but I would definitely bump up in the summer.  We tend to have far reaching melanomas because we think skin cancer doesn't affect us.  The skin is the largest organ of the body and should be treated with care always.

I play a lot of tennis is the spring and summer and am constantly applying sunscreens, which brings me to an important point.  Reapplication!  Put on your moisturizer in the morning is wonderful but that sun protection doesn't last all day, degradation, sweat and simple exposure all lead to its errosion so apply at least twice.

You will probably still get color in the summer.  Sunscreens don't block light, lol.  In fact although a lot block a wide spectrum of UVA and UVB rays; I don't know of any that can provide total coverage, plus that sun is a master at keeping us flush with Vitamin D.

Ahhhh I never thought of that. In the summer I'm sweating my ass off and of course its coming off. I had some 40 spf face stuff from Neutrogena but it didn't have the gold shimmer like Clean and Clear's shimmer moisterizer LMAO. It gives me that pregnant glow  I'm gonna do better next summer. The women that have worked my job for a long time....man thier face looks like leather!!! Not sexy! Didn't know that I can still get a tan with the sunscree. Dag you learn something new everyday.

Thanks Shay

No problem...have you thought of using a bronzer?  I have absolutely no experience with the preggers glow but it gives me a shimmer that I love.  I used one last year to offset the titanium white glow of some sunscreens.
Pockerchips hipped me to a site that has one I am going to try as soon as it comes in, lol. I'll let you know.

My daughter took part in the local Relay for LIfe events for the last couple of years.  :-)

Thats wonderful, maybe you will join her this year.  I started participating in 2000 when I lived in Ohio, who knew it would lead to all of this now?

Its a lot of work, but the reason I am so into it is that the research that ACS funds leads to not only helping cancer patients but others as well.  My sister has sickle cell which we know is seen as a "black disease" and not heavily funded (although it is the classic genetic disease and it used as a foundation of environmental evolution...I digress) anyway, many cancers cause anemia in its patients and if the cancer doesn'ts the treatments do.  The strides that have been made in the treatment of anemias have been largely due to the ACS fundraising efforts.  The way I see it; there is more than one way to skin a cat! LOL
