New Post-op Tip of The Day
Let's talk about fertility today. Most people when they were morbidly obese were infertile and did not have a cycle. Many women also suffered from PCOS. Well after surgery things begin to happen to your body. A lot of women start having a regular cycle. Estrogen is stored in our body fat and when we lose weight our hormones are bouncing all over the place.
Discuss a birth control plan BEFORE surgery with your surgeon because it is not healthy for you or the baby to get pregnant within the first year of surgery. Most surgeons even recommend 18 months after surgery. Please be aware that birth control pills will not be absorbed fully due to our malabsorbing nature. Some women opt to get an IUD placed the day of surgery. Your birth control method is a very personal choice but it is something you shouldn't ignore, even if you're not in a relationship because you never know what might happen.
*Disclaimer-I'm not a dr. or nurse but just sharing things I've learned along the way. Discuss any medical issues with your dr.*

I just have to say I'm LOVING these post-op tips of the day!!!!! Many of us are hearing stuff for the first time and many are hearing it again after a long time. I remember some of the things you (and others) have posted but it was soooooo long ago when I was doing my research about WLS.
THANK YOU (and all of the others who share)!!!!

You're welcome. I've learned a lot from BAF and OH but also from research and reading. I used to be a teacher so I guess teaching or sharing is in my blood. I know that I had a lot of questions pre-op and newly post-op and I still have questions that the veterans of this board continue to answer for me. Remember to just pay it forward.
Thanks for this. Its been on my mind for some time now. I haven't used in any hormonal birth control for a year or so. I don't think I was even ovualting at my heaviest and now I just got back to my old normal cycle of every 28 days. And its only been a month. Before it was all over the place 26-40+ days.
I'm single in every sense of the word now so it wasn't a big deal before surgery but I guess it wouldn't hurt to have the talk and prescription for when that time comes.
