New Post-op Tip of The Day

It is very imortant to get your protein in even though you may not have much of an appetite or have a found a protein suppliment that you like.

-One way to get protein in during the first few weeks after surgery is adding unflavored protein to your soups or broths. I liked Unjury unflavored protein but GNC makes one as well. Unjury also sells a chicken soup protein but you may not want to invest that much money in something you may not like.

-A lot of us don't like protein drinks because of the smell first, our sense of smell is heightened after surgery so it is a good idea to make a protein shake and put it in a cup with a lid so you can't smell it.

-I add vanilla protein powder to high protein low sugar oatmeal and I can't taste the protein at all. My favorite oatmeal is Live Active Oatmeal Maple Syrup & Pecan that I get at Kroger but Kashi makes a good one also.

-I also mix Twisted Cherry Protein with Walmart SF Cherry Limeade Drink mix or the Roadside Lemonaide with SF Lemonberry Drink mix or SF Tea.

Become a mixologist and get creative in order to get your protein in. Our bodies will only absorb about 36 grams of protein at once so those drinks with 70 grams of protein won't give you your whole days worth in one setting. Space it out. It does get easier.

I agree, the tips are good,  I 100% agree with the one the other day put of eating carbs and sugar as long as possible.   I tell newbies that all the time.

The last tip of how much protein is absorbed is great to know!

I also wanted to state that getting sample sizes of protein helps your pocket. If you do not like it, it does not have to sit on your shelf.

Lastly, I like the idea of adding vanilla protein to your oatmeal. I have nto tried that one, but I am tomorrow.

Thanks for the tips!

Thanks that's good to know.  I'm one of those people that would try to knok out the protein intake at one time.  Then I would have been purplexed as to why I'm having low protein complications.

Thank you!

What brand is that twisted cherry, sounds good?

Synthrax Nectar sells the Twisted Cherry and lots of fruit flavored protein. I ordered samples of these from vitalady.com to see how I liked them first. She is a poster on OH that sells samples of lots of different protein powders and full sizes as well. I've also tried the Orange Matrix protein powder mixed with sf Tropicana Orangeade found in the soda section but it's not carbonated.

The Unjury protein powder is sold on the Unjury.com site. My NUT gave me samples of it at my pre-op appt.

When mixing a protein powder with something hot you have to be careful or it will clump or turn grainy so I mix my powder in a little measuring cup with just enough water to make a paste and then add it to the hot beverage slowly.

Depending on your surgeon and nut, it's usually 60 grams. But all surgeons and nut's are different so make sure you're following their recommendations.
