My observations on yesterday's event.
Like just about everyone else, I was sitting in front of a t.v. set or a computer (I alternated back and forth as cnn.com started to freeze) watching with pride and awe at the spectacle of a peaceful change in power in which this man of vision took possession of the most powerful political positon on the planet, according to many.
I kept hearing how this was a great day for Americans in general and African-Americans in particular. Granted, I felt great pride in President O being THE FIRST. Thinking about it, I equated this achievement with many other firsts done by our people. I thought about Jackie Robinson, Jack Johnson (first black heavyweight boxing champion), Dr. Charles Drew, Shirley Chisom (sp?) and a few others. While we are right to feel proud about these firsts, including President Obama's (dayum, that feels good to type), he cannot be THE LAST.
This man had the chance to be as dominant a figure in American history as Franklin Roosevelt by virtue of the "perfect storm" (two unpopular wars, the worst financial situation since The Great Depression, and a host of other things) pushing him into the position. My hope is that he is, indeed, able to push this nation forward to greatness, thus insuring this nation that a black man is, indeed, more than capable of not just being elected, but running this country . While I am sure that he will do the job to the best of his ability, my hope is that the generation of youngsters, no matter what color (for there is nothing wrong with there being not only another African-American pres, but how about a Hispanic-American, or a Chinese-American, or whatever), will see this man and actually believe they can achieve whatever they put their minds to.
I don't mind admitting that on Election Night, when he gave his acceptance speech, I was a bit misty-eyed (No, I'm NOT turning in my man card..da' hayle with that-lol) in that, like a majority of us, I never thought I'd see this in my lifetime. But, seeing the way this man carries himself, I'm sure that we have made the correct choice going forward.

I believe he is the right man for the job, at this time. I love the way he carries himself with confidence and humility and humor and intelligence and compassion. I want to also see Hillary become one of the great SoS of all time.
Hey, we have HOPE again.
I totally feel you on this topic. I cried watching all the festivities. But I have no doubt in my mind that President Obama will do his thing as our nations leader. We always excel when given the opportunity.

I agree with you 1000%. The thing that we all have to keep telling ourselves is that this is NOT the end, but only the BEGINNING.

D,
I feel you on EVERYTHING you said. I'm happy for where we are and how far we have come however I also understand that the glass is still 3/4 empty. We still got a "long way to ho3". (old country term)
So when we come off our emotional high of where we are. We are still down by 14 in the 4qtr w/ 4:00 minutes and they have the ball and we only got 2 timeouts.
I feel obligated to do more in my community and help more than I've been helping those around me. I think this should open everyone's eyes to see we have to do more. As black men we need to do WAYY MORE than what we've been doing for each other. Grab a hold to that plow and keep it moving....
WE GOT A LONG WAY TO GO......
GET INVOLVED!!!
I am very proud to have a man in office that seems to get the state of our economy with a clear plan to improve it. I am proud that the man happens to be black.
I am not proud that black folks allow petty perceived slights against Obama to color the day. Not seeming to get the fact that by harping on them and feeding into racists comments that they (the black person) are no better because they lack the ability to let it go in one ear and out the other. People will always talk...but they are simply talking to themselves to hear themselves spea****il someone feeds into their comments.
As Obama stated "we" not only he have a job to do. Where is the confirmation that anyone even got that? Why can't the energy spent on sharing pettiness be used by everyone to think about what they are doing wrong and start making plans to save and budget to assist the government with digging us out of this big hole?
You are indeed right about the pettiness. I think what it may come down to is maybe a sense of being somewhat thin skined sometimes. There are those that are going to think that ever slight against the president, whether percieved or actual, would be because he happens to be black. In some cases, that may be true, but in most, it won't be. That he is in the most powerful position puts him in a bull's eye position for critcism. Hell, if he doesn't do the right thing by me, I'll probably be as critical of him as I would be of Bush or any other president.
