I need a strategy to make the best case for surgery. BMI+47, no comorbities except PCO. When I go to my doctor to weigh in, what do I say other than I need help? If my files indicate that I have a history of yoyo diets, weight loss, weight gain, ect., what will 6 month prove?

I need suggestions on what to do so that I can demonstrate a need for this surgery. I hear my insurance company is prudent on wls.  Should I join weigh****chers, which never worked for me? or maybe the actkins which will help me loose 20 pounds but gain40? diet pills that will make me bounce off the walls.

Believe it or not that is exactly the information that your Surgeon and insurance wants to know. They want to know the results of every yo-yo diet, diet prorgam and diet pill.

Did you already see a surgeon?  If you did you can ask the nut that works for him/her if they have a diet plan that you can follow (if they don't have a nut I would probably try to find a new surgeon because the nut is going to be crucial during your journey).  My nut gave me a list of goals and every month when I saw her we woud pick 3 different goals for me to do every month, so it wasn't so much as a diet as it was doing things that I would have to do after surgery anyway like taking vitamins everyday and cutting out all drinks with calories and caffeine.  I also had to go to my PCP every month and get wieghed in and tell her how I was doing.  There are a couple of reasons for the 6 month diet.  For the insurance company it is to prove that you are committed to loosing weight before they approve a $20,000+ surgery.  For your surgeon it is to prove that you are committed and also to shrink your liver so that it is easier to get around it during surgery.  They aren't expecting you to loose massive amounts of weight, so don't feel it neccessary to yo-yo diet.  My surgeon only required that I loose 10 lbs.  Whne it was time to submitt to my insurance company my surgeons office just submitted with the notes that my nut had taken since I saw her every month and got weighed in by her as well and my insurance company approved me with just that.  We had my PCP as a back up in case I was denied but that way we didn't have to wait for the PCP's office to write a letter.

Are you already working with a surgeon?  If so - his office ought to be able to let you know what the pupose and tone of the 6 month visits should be.  With the program I worked with - they told me what to expect, what the purpose was.... not what to 'say' if you will - but I could read between the lines - they told me what they needed in order to send my case to insurance for approval.

Sounds like you have researched your insurance, but maybe the doc's office folk have some more insight??

I don't just have issues, I have subscriptions!  I'm saving on the newsstand price.......

I am going to give them a call and request a strategy. I sat with a nutricionist and she gave me goals, but made no mention of follow up.
