Shout Out To The Lurkers
The DS is a great surgery and I really believe in it. It has the highest percentage of Excess Weight Loss and the highest percentage of maintaining weight loss. This isn't some new surgery it has been around for years and has tons of medical journals dedicated to its results. I'm not sure if you have any co-morbidities but the DS is the best surgery for curing type 2 diabetes because of the "switch" which is the intestinal portion of the surgery. The surgery changes you body's metabolism and insulin resistance.
The stomach is reduced in size but left as a fully functioning stomach. Since we have the pylorus valve intact we do not dump. Also if you have to take any NSAIDS you can keep taking them with the DS also because we have a stomach instead of the RNY pouch. So don't throw the Motrin away quite yet! lol You can also drink with your meals if you like.
The maintenace of weight loss is mostly achieved with the intestinal portion of the surgery. The DS has the greatest malabsorption of all the WLS. We malabsorb 80% of fat, 40% of protien, and about 40% of complex carbs. For example if I ate something that had 100g of fat in it my body would treat is as 20g of fat. So really, everything I eat is low fat. Some find it hard to live forever on a low-carb, low-fat diet. This is one of the things that attracted me to the DS...the post op eating life. I can still enjoy some of my favorite foods and still lose weight. Buffalo wings for days baby! lol Now we do absorb 100% of simple carbs so you have to really watch those. But they're not good for you anyway!
Now like the RNY any surgery with malabsorbtion needs vitamin supplementation. I do take quite a few vitamins but now has become routine. I've seen many RNYers that take as many vitamins as I do. But your personal labs will dictate how many you must take. It is required to have your labs taken for life. No exceptions. I am due for my 3 month labs next month. You also have to eat 80-100g of protien a day. Since we have a bigger capacity stomach than RNY it is not hard at all to reach that number. I usually drink a protien shake in the AM and then eat normally for the rest of the day. A lot of farther out DSers get all thier protien from eating. I am still new so I don't eat as much as them.....yet lol. As with RNY your stomach will stretch some after time and give you more eating room. .
You're in the area so if you ever wanna hook up and pick my brain just let me know. I told you I could talk DS talk all day lol. There's more to learn. Check the DS board out too. Lots of good info!

Hello to all the BAF family! My name is Tanya and I too am a daily lurker...
Its funny how I come to this board just about everyday and over the past few months it almost feels like I know many of the regular posters. You guys are truly a trip! As often as I have wanted to jump in I just never felt like any one post was a right time so to Neenaj...thanks for giving us lurkers an opportunity to come out of hiding
Let's see...I am also at the beginning of this WLS journey. I have actually done a lot of research so I have just about all my duckies in order for the insurance approval part (at least I hope I do). I have a ton of appoints set up fin the next couple of weeks (psych eval, nut counseling, and most importantly my consult with the surgeon.) Hopefully things will run smooth and I will be the loser side real soon.
Not trying to start any mess or step on any toes...I have only been in lurk mode here for the past few months but I will honestly say I am glad for the many posts in the last couple of days to try and get the board back to more of a place for WL support. Please don't get me wrong...the drama and O/T posts are very entertaining but I personally felt like I had to go to other boards to get answers or gain knowledge on the more WL related topics. Today it was really nice to get a good mixture of serious and not so serious posts to read. I truly commend all of you for your efforts. I hope to find my self not only on the losers bench with most of you but also as a part of the BAF "family"
Wishing everyone a good weekend as we celebrate the end of an ERROR and the beginning of CHANGE!
Tanya
