I just got another call from the school nurse and my daughter is complaining of severe pain in her pelvic area.. i took her to the emergency room a few months ago and the dr found a cyst on her ovary..it went away on it's own but i don't think I can endure another three to four days of watching her in extreme agony..(trust me,. men do have sympathy pains) anyway i did some research on this and most drs recommend putting her on birth control to prevent the cysts from popping (damn wrong word) appearing so often.. I had an appt with a gynecologist but i have such serious reservations about putting her fast butt on BC pills..but i can't take watching her in pain like that again..So, is it true?  does BC stop the cysts from growing?  And what do i do in teh meantime because the ER doc never gave her any meds other than ibuprofen?  is there anything that you guys can recommend to help with the pain?  And why does this seem to affect black women more than any other race?  Damn, there goes my weekend..thanks in advance

Yes, BC pills are commonly used. I don't have any experience with this myself though. Hope BabyGirl gets help quick and gets to feeling better.

She could have PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) I have it and it does lead to some painful ruptured cyst. The BC will help with the symptom but you really need to get her to an Endocrinologist and see if she has the PCOS and they may start her on BC or additioanl meds. Let me know if I can be of additional help.

Yeah, the pill helped me alot with this.  My Dr once thought my appendix burst since I was so miserable.

The best I could suggest is to remind her the pill isn't a pass for her to be out and about sexually.  How old is your daughter?

I hate to play devil's advocate but at 17 it might not be a bad idea for her to be on the pill anyway.  I could understand your conflict if she was 13 or 14.

Hope she's feeling better soon.

The doc may have prescribed the BC pills because they stop you from ovulating, when you don't ovulate you are less likely to form new cysts.  Another alternative to the pill would be the Depo-Provera shot, which is administered every 3 months but it has been known to cause weight gain, irregular periods or extended periods.

Follow up with the gynecologist, she may need to have a pelvic ultrasound, and also discuss stronger pain meds.

Yes it is.  The BC pills will only help her IF she remembers to take them.  The shot is administered once every 3 months.
