Went to my information session this evening

Ok I know this may take forever to post since I am a new member but I went to my information session this evening and I spoke with one of the doctors as well as the girl that does the admission and insurance etc for the surgery and she said that I am right at the borderline and I may not qualify.  She also told me that it my insurance requires at least 6 months of a medically supervised weight loss program which I did back in 2007 into 2008 so that would speed up the process if I am approved so right now I am in limbo with everything.

When I first went to my doc and told him I wanted to have the surgery he told me to start the 1200 calorie diet and I was a good candidate.  Here is my thing if I continue with this diet or that there of I will continue to lose weight as I have lost 6 lbs since last Friday and really will not qualify for  the surgery as having a condition of high blood pressure since childhood may not be enough.

At this point I don't know what to do.  If I don't qualify I will do it without surgery and still may have the high blood pressure because it seems as if  it is just something I am going to have although I don't want that to be the case.

Hey, Meg. How u doing?

Well, since having high blood pressure may not be enough *sigh!*, that kinda sucks.  For me, I was borderline diabetic (no meds, only diet and excersise) and suffered from sleep apnea (thought I was never put on the machine).

Sometimes, and this is purely unethical, you may have to make up co-morbidities if you are really truly dead set on having the surgery.  I"m not saying to DO this, but sometimes some ppl do.

Hey D thanks for the reply.  I know what you are saying in the second paragraph LOL.  My boyfriend asked me if I was going to gain the weight just to have the surgery and I was like heck no I cannot put myself though that again when I feel and see myself getting close to 250 I immediately start diet and exercise again.  I just hope it all works out.

Oh yeah and I have heard about people that do that.

While on my 3 month "diet" I gained 10 lbs. Check what your insurance company expects with the diet. Most do not require you to lose weight, just have on paper from a Dr, that you attempted the diet. Sure, tell your Dr. that you're eating the 1200 calories, exercising, tracking your food....all that. He/she will note that on your chart and see you again next month.

I just barely qualified for surgery when I went for my consult also. At the time of surgery I was 262 and 5'6, no co-morbidities, after I gained weight.

I think it is unfortunate that one has to jump through so many hoops just to prove the medical field they have done the best that they can. I have done that here and i just decided that I am gonna pay out of pocket for a second chance at life. I hope that both happens that you still continue to lose weight and that you still qualify for surgery because I believe that you should still be considered and that losing weight may very well help the recovery process.
