I have an appt next month for this Medgem. Its supposed to be a breathing exercise, in which they test your metabolism.

Anybody had this? Is it helpful?

My surgeons PA arranged for me to have it thru my nutritionist--who was not in. but the lady that answered the phone told me it only takes like 5-10 minutes to do,, and they can test how high/low your metabolism is, and give you instructions on how to pick up your metabolism to enhance weight loss.

Let me know what you find out.

In layman terms...it tells  you how many calories your body burns doing nothing, this information is good to know because lets say that your body burns 2000 calories a day breathing, gettign up and down and this is all you do during the day, yet you eat 5000 calories, this will tell you why you are fat and will tell you what yo need to do to lose weight..either

1.  cut the calories down to 2000 calories or

2.  do something to burn the extra 3000 calories.

Does that make sense to you??

The MedGem indirect calorimeter, a FDA 510K-cleared Class II medical device is a state-of-the-art, handheld device that accurately measures oxygen consumption (VO2) to determine resting metabolic rate (RMR)*. The measurement is easy to administer and provides accurate results in only a few minutes. The easy to use device allows for personalization and accurate development of individual nutrition and weight management goals. With each MedGem comes the MedGem Analyzer professional companion software. MedGem Analyzer allows for easy monitoring of real-time measurement data, export feature for further data analysis, and report generation for patient education.

I had my RMR measured at my gym.  It helpee me a lot to know my numbers and my goal on where I need to aimed for.

I've had it done.  We have a fitness center at work and they bring in stuff like that from time to time.  You breathe into the tube with your nose clipped from 5 -10 minutes and it assesses your resting metabolic rate.  I was really pleased with the results until I had another test done at the hospital.  At the hospital they brought the machine to my room first thing in the morning and my resting metabolic rate was much lower than what the Medgem said. At the hospital I was put under a plastic bubble that captured the air I was breathing.

Once you finish the test they will give you a sheet with your metabolic rate and your required caloric intake to maintain or lose 1, 2 or 3 pounds a week.  It's pretty good information to have.  They even gave me some sample diet plans to meet those goals.

I just had it done last week. My resting metabolism is only 1530 and it should be over 1900.  My NUT said that the number can be increased with regular exercise and eating small meals throughout the day.  We are going to re-test it after every 10 pounds that I lose.
