Locks & hair loss

Hi BAF,
I'm a newbie to this forum (didn't even know it was here).  I have been growing my locks for nearly 5 years and they're getting pretty long.  I'm scheduled for rny on the 26th and the thought of my hair thinning to the point of possibly having to cut them off is worrying me to death.

Anyone out there who has managed not to loose their hair that can pass on some desired info or is hair loss inevitable?

The reasons for hair falling off have been debated by different sources. I've read its the anesthesia that shocks our body, or our bodies being in ketosis for long periods of time, some people say its from not eating enough protien, some say genetics. Who knows. I condition my hair longer, take all my vitamins including biotin, and before surgery I joined several around my hairline that were thin. The weight of thin locs on the root is often a problem with people's locs breaking off. Especially around the hairline where they are pulled and put into ponytails often.

Some people's hair fall off some don't. I'm just waiting to see if I'm one of the lucky ones that it doen't. Hell, I'd rather be skinny and cut my locs off then fat and have long flowing hair. Just a lil perspective.

Thanks star,
question, what kind of biotin supplement do you take?  I see that you did the duo, can you swallow pills?

No problem girl. I wish I could tell you for sure what worked cause I would surely be doing it too lol. I take I think 5000mg Biotin. I will have to double check when I go home. I'll send you a PM. It's just a generic kind, nothing special. I ordered it online, just cause I was ordering everything else anyway, but they sell it everywhere. I do know I most def have to get my eyebrows done more often, it helps hair everywhere!

RNY on 10/21/08 with
My mother had RNY back in 1999 shortly after she got locs. Her hair is naturally finer and grows faster than most black women that I know. She began to shed hair slowly but it didnt really stop. Now she wears a wig and a majority of her head is bald, she's going thru treatment to regrow her hair. I'm sure everyone is different but I would suggest braids or locs during this time but again I also know of a white girl who had locs and her hair actually began to grow faster and thicker...everyone is different. good luck!

I have had locks for the past year and half and they are shoulder length now.  I haven't had any hair loss and I am 4 months out!!  Thank GOD!!  EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT when it comes to the pros and cons of this surgery.  What works for me may not work for you.  All I can tell you is to make sure you do EVERYTHING your surgeon and nutritionist tell you as far as supplements and food consumption.  Continue to maintain your locks as you normally do and hope for the best.  Honestly.

Good luck you on your journey and GOD BLESS!!!
