Hi All,

I've been dying to get my hair braided before surgery on Feb.5th. Do you guys think that's a good idea with the possibility of hair loss? I really just don't want to be bothered with my hair while in the hospital and recovery.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks!

You should. I havent lost any hair I had my WLS on dec 18 2008. My hair was a mess when i was in the hospital. It will make you feel better your hair is done. And just think when you have all those people come and visit you, your hair will be all done up!!!

I had surgery on 12/18/08 and I was told not to get braids.  My friend said that you can't actually see what is going on with your hair and it just may fall out.

i was wondering the same thing, but I just got it relaxed thinking I would have time. Found out that I am having surgery next week, SO IMMA see my hairdresser and see what she recommends. I might have to do a weave...

Braided in what way?  I'd judge it based on cost.  If it's an expensive hairdo, I'd skip it.  If it's not, then sure.  My hair didn't go bald but started to break off.  Lucky for me, I have thick coarse hair, so it wasn't as obvious as some.  I didn't see a lot of breakage until @ 1 1/2 months or longer.  Each person is different though...

I didn't get mine braided, so my hair was a hot mess in the hospital.  I did NOT take any pix while there for that reason...LOL.

Take care,

Well I guess it depends on u......I rock weaves like a pro and my hair is thick and a nice length...but I still get weaves so....I got my hair weaved on a friday had surgery on monday...it was cool for me my mom would braid it down the middle it looked natural it was all to the good...so about a month later was my moms bday...i was able to curl my hair it was still all to the good when I had drs appt still all to the good no trouble (4  ME) anywho so when it was time for a new weave i had hair   loss...but Im sure with it braided it would have done the same think or even it i had it in a ponytail ( 4 ME) because my hair is thick and long it just looked like it had thinned out.still had lenght..so I keep my hair weaved up take all meds and keep my hair conditioned very well I still had hair lost I am now 1 year and some months out and my hair is back to how it was still thick and long...but I still think everybody is different some dont have any hair come out...so I think you should go with whatever works better for you and your hair.....

Thats all I have to say about that lol

I don't recall if I had my hair braided for my surgery - but I have been rocking braids for about two years now...... I did lose hair after WLS - but only after about 4 to 5 months - so if you got the $$ - I'd say DO IT cause you will NOT feel like being bothered with your hair afterward!!!

I wear braids now because I work out so much - I have scalp issues and washing it all the time doesn't work for the flat/curling iron styles I would prefer to wear - so I rock the braids and do them the way I like.  My hair is short enough that the braids look almost like regular hair......

I don't just have issues, I have subscriptions!  I'm saving on the newsstand price.......

Thanks so much everyone. The weird thing is.............my hair is doing a little shedding.........must be this Michigan weather.

I don't want to look a mess or worry about hair. Plus, I know I'll be working out and I sweat in the head really bad.

I'm so glad I'm on this site; I don't think anyone on the Michigan board could help. lol

I had my hair in corn rows when I had my surgery and tied it up at night while I was in the hospital.  It worked well for me.
