Hi guys I'm pre-op and have had my mind set on the RNY surgery.  But I'm starting to get really nervous about complications. Has anyone here had the VSG surgery?  I would like to know from you guys why you chose the VSG, any regrets, any complications?  If you had to do it all over again would you still choose the VSG?  This is such a major decision and quite honestly I'm scared to death.  A little back ground about me.  I weigh 350 lbs, have type 2 diabetes, moderate sleep apnea, and I am 30 years old.

Thanks

Hi, Moriahjt! I know you were asking about the VSG and the RNY, but I just wanted to throw another contender into the race. The DS which essentially is the VSG with a "switch" has statistictly the best cure rate for type 2 diabetes, highest percentage of EWL, and lowest percentage of weight gain of all of the surgeries.

All of the surgeries have pros and cons, and of course with any surgery there is a possibility for complications. If you are content with your surgery of choice I would not let the "what ifs" get in the way of your success.

You could be successful with any of the surgeries, just when I read the part about type 2 diabetes I wanted to let you know about the DS. The "switch" of the DS is what cures the diabetes. In non-obese people it is also used to cure type 2 diabetes.

I had this surgery 2 months ago and love it so far. Feel free to ask me any questions about it if you wish.

ETA: Sorry I forgot to say that the switch is the intestinal portion of the surgery. You could check out dsfacts.com and duodenalswitch.com for more information also.

Hi,
I am 7 months out and down 85 pds.  Love the sleeve.  With the sleeve you pretty much are forced to eat smaller portions.  No regrets other than not doing it earlier.

Hello,

I have had the VSG since December 22, 2008. Surgery was only 45min. and I am doing fine. I have a sister who had RNY and she says had she known about the sleeve before having her surgery, she would have chosen it instead. She has lost all of her excess weight, but is aggravated by the fact of having to take the supplements the rest of her life. I choose the sleeve because I wasn't comfortable with them moving things around in me. It really just depends on what you have peace about. If there is no peace about your choice then choose something else, but like stated earlier all of the operation can have complications and each one has its pros and cons. Pray about the right choice.

I had a VSG on November 4th. I choose this surgery for several reasons.  I did not want dumping or malabsorption.   I'm not good about taking pills so it would have been a bad idea for me to have a surgery that would require a lot of vitamins to take.   I love it because I'm allowed to still eat the same foods just much less of them.  I needed a surgery with restriction only to keep me from getting that 2nd or 3rd plate of food.

You have to analyze your eating style and whether or not you have a food addiction.  Are you a volume eater, eat sweets or graze all day?   That should be the major deciding factor on what type of surgery you choose.
