Hey everyone.... I was wondering if any black women had any success with the lap band? I read the research stating that most black women don't. I am starting to wonder if I made the right decision. I know the weight loss is slow but I haven't found no one who lost more than 30 lbs. **** I need to lose at least 100..

I've never really heard of weight loss results varying with race.  There are severl women on here that have done VERY well.  I lost 50 lbs my first year with the band and that was with a non functioning port.  As long as you're willing to follow the Band rules I don't think you'll have problems.

Hi there! I have heard of similar situations myself, however, I am 9 weeks out and I am down a total of 35.5lbs so far and the scales seem to move as long as I do what I should. I honestly think it depends on the person and their mindset. I look at the band as a tool and that's it. I went in to this looking at it that way. I realize that I can still choose to put the wrong things in my mouth which is why I'm a huge believer in being real with oneself. I had to ask myself what are the REAL reasons I eat and why I used to eat SO much. Know what I mean?? It's just my opinion but I think that some (black, white, brown, or yellow) do not face/deal with the reasons behind some of their actions therefore causing the band not to work the way it was designed to. Don't get me wrong, it's hard as hell! I have my moments as I'm sure we all do. But all in all this is what I signed up for and fought my insurance for so I will be damned if I did all this to not get the result I have/am working for. lol!

If you gone keep doing the same things you did b4 the surgery then no it's not going to work for you and COLOR would not be a factor ... check out Naomi profile she has lost I beleive about 100lbs there r a lot of black woman on this site that have done good with the band I have about 54 more to go so honey you can do it ....

Hello.  As the others have state, race isn't a factor when it comes to working your tool correctly.  IF you are willing to follow the band rules and exercise, you'll succeed in your weight loss endeavors.  I have 19lbs to go to reach my goal...crossing fingers that'll I get there by my 1 year surgiversary date.  Good luck to you!

Hey there!  I realize you are a newbie to the board - so PLEASE do not think I am trying to 'push up' on you when I ask.... I am REALLY just curious......

what made you choose the lap band over any other procedure?  and how much are you looking to lose in total?

I don't just have issues, I have subscriptions!  I'm saving on the newsstand price.......

I chose the band because the heal process was faster. I like the fact that if I am having problems I can get it removed. I also didn't want to lose to much weight. I would like to be 180, 160 at the least. My aunt had the gastric bypass and she became skinny. I want to be thick. In order to be thick I have to lose 130lbs.

Can a black woman have success with the lap band? Without a doubt. I find it interesting that you have not found anyone one with the lapband that have lost more than 30 pounds. But I think the more important question is not if a black woman can be successful but can YOU be sucessful.

Your BMI is a little high but it not impossible, but as you stated, the weight can be much slower.

Good luck.

I am one that havent been as successful with the band as I had hoped.....cant attribute it to my ethnicity,  as much as I can admit that I havent been doing what I should.

In the beginning of my journey I was doing very well....hitting the gym regularly , eating protein first and drinking like a horse......all with no fill......I began to get the fills and got very dependent on them to do the work and here I sit - no where near my goal.

Im trying to get my mental right so that I can continue on this  process...I want to lose an additional 100 lbs. Im currently down 75.  Sometimes it seems like I can make it, other times  Im thinking that this seems impossible and I should consider other options.

I dont have any more answers than the next person except to say that its really all about staying motivated in your journey, no matter what surgery you have opted to get.  RNY folks deal with the same thing......just much later in their journies.  Also its important to get to the heart of why you find comfort in eating. Im brainstorming that as well cause its real. Regardless, It is what it is.

Hope my feedback helped some...good luck to you
