RNY vs Lap Band

I chose lapband because I was terrified of RNY.  The decreased risk of complications sealed the deal for me.

Regardless which WLS you have, you'll have to depend on yourself to work the tool that you choose in order to get the results you want.

Good luck to you.

I chose RNY because of my high BMI and my need for a method that would last.

1 - I wanted lap band but my DOC insisted on RNY - it fit my needs

2 - WHO lied and told you RNY doesn't have control and discipline requirements?  LOL!  hell - after the first 2 years - that **** is ALL the same!!!!

I don't just have issues, I have subscriptions!  I'm saving on the newsstand price.......

Thanks for all of your feedback.

I thought about having WLS about 5 years ago but my BMI wasnt high enough nor did I have any co-morbidities...but since 2006 I had surgery and picked up some co-mordities along the way...I have severe osteoarthritis and now have difficulty walking...so I went from being the cute chunky girl who wore high heels and dresses 24/7 to someone who doesnt even have a skirt that fits anymore and can barely walk 5 minutes in 3 inch heels without pain...although I needed to loose weight before and have probably been on every diet known to man the limitations on my ability to walk on a daily basis have taken this entire thing to another level.

I've done a significant amount of research on RNY and Lapband and asked those questions because for me they are the two conflicting issues I have with the procedures. I understand that no matter what WLS you have you need discipline but I agree with those that went with RNY because its a permanent procedure because thats what has me pulling in the direction of RNY. But also there are the risks and complications that can cause additional surgeries which makes Lapband more appealing. I understand (based on my findings) that after 5 years they (RNY and Lapband) level out to the same amount of weight loss. The other issue I have with Lapband is the fills and adjustments that rerquire you to see a doctor on a regular basis. My lifestyle isnt suited for that and its my understanding that doctor visits is necessary for sucess. I have two appointments next week with the Obesity Center at New York University Medical Center and the Obesity Center at Columbia University Medical Center. I was just curious as to people's personal decisions to chose either Lapband or RNY and is there are any additional questions that I could pose to the doctors next week.

Oh in addition I am currently on limited walking and can only work out my upper body at the gym (except they say I can swim too) I have had surgery and knee injections and the doctor says I need to loose 100 pounds...

Once again thanks for all of your help!!

You look and think just like me. In fact I am in NY and have 100 pounds to loose as well. I have my initial meeting next week and I have been contimpalting the same question, rny or lapband? While rerouting my insides scares the hell out of me, so does band erosion and slippage. UGH! No matter how much reading I do, I still feel as though I will never know what is best. Also,  I just wish I knew if my insurance was going to cover me. The other night someone posted that they also have united healthcare and it didnt take 6 months. However, given my luck, I will have to wait. At any rate, I am so unhappy about this excessive weight that I cannot think straight. I know should take one day at a time but I am just so overwhelmed at this whopping number when I get on the scale.

1)I chose the Lap Band primarily because I can't get over the idea of having my insides re-routed.  I was also afraid of complications.  I knew several people that had RNY that were always sickly or had regained their weight.  Also I saw pts with complications of RNY as a nurse.  I also like he idea that weight loss would be a bit slower, gives my head time to catch up with the changes in my body

2)I think with both surgeries you need to be willing to make serious lifestyle changes, especially after the honey moon period of weight loss with a RNY ends.

I originally wanted to get lapband, but very quickly changed to RNY because of the complication rates.

1.Laparoscopic banding procedures are unproven in the long term, whereas RNY has been performed since the late 1960s early 1970s, and has a good track record, though it isn't without complications.

2. After RNY the risk of complication decreases with time, whereas it increases with time with the lap band. (My surgeon said this)

3. A lap band is a foreign body, and the immune system sometimes will reject it.

4. Having to go get fills. I ******g hate needles.

5. Check out the Duodenal Switch procedure, not all surgeons do it, and not all insurance will cover it, but because the stomach is reduced in size vertically and the pancreas can still give digestive enzymes, you eliminate dumping syndrome. Find a diagram, it would explain it better.

Up until a couple of days ago I was having the same question RNY vs Lap Band.  After much research, discussions with my surgeon and some good old fashion soul searching about ME... I have decided on the RNY.  Granted I have changed my mind three times in the past.  But I felt I was making the correct choice this time and have now completed my pre-op in order to "set it in my mind".
Best wishes on your decision.

Hi There:
You may want to vary your research into other forums on OH, like the RNY Message Board and the Lap Band Message Board. There are several Posts on why someone would choose RNY (on that board). You may expand your perceptions of why you choose a particular surgery. Trust me, you will always have to work to get and maintain a goal weight no matter which one you choose. Choosing is based on your short term and long term goals and needs, but you have to know what each WLS does, but for sure...You will have to work and be committed to your wellness. Hope this helps.

1. Did you chose lap band over RNY beucase the decreased risk of complications and the fact that its not a permanent procedure?
I chose because there are less chances of vitamin and mineral malabsorbsion issues.  I know that I would skip my vitamins every chance I got.

2. Did you chose the RNY over the lab pand becasue you wanted to have less of a dependency on yourself as compared to the lap band that I have heard reqiures a enormous amount of discipline?
You do have to be disciplined to lose weight with the Lapband, but I feel that RNY requires more discipline because you will have to keep up with vitamin and mineral supplements.

There are about 14 diferent types of WLS.  Just do a lot of research and decide what will work best for you.
Good Luck,
