RNY vs Lap Band

I am a newbie and very interested in the varying reasons that some people chose the RNY versus lap band. So any replies or advice would be greatlty appreciated. More specifically if you could include answers to these questions in the reply that would be good too.

1. Did you chose lap band over RNY beucase the decreased risk of complications and the fact that its not a permanent procedure?

2. Did you chose the RNY over the lab pand becasue you wanted to have less of a dependency on yourself as compared to the lap band that I have heard reqiures a enormous amount of discipline?

Thanks,

D

I chose lap band simply because I was scared of the RNY. The complication possibilities were too much for me to overcome.

Granted, I think the RNY is a great surgery,, it just wasnt for me.

2 years out, and NOT losing what I wanted to lose with the band,, lets ME know that the band DOES take discipline.

Im on the fight back, but rny results usually outshine band results.

Hey welcome to the board. I didn't have either surgery, but I just wanted to add there are also the VSG and the DS. I understand you wanting to get other people's thoughts but it is a very subjective question.. I suggest you reasearch all the surgeries on many different sites (not just OH), read some medical journals on success rates and studies, and figure out which surgery fits in with your lifestyle and expectations. Each surgery has different pros and cons.

Good Luck

No prob, I just want everyone to have all the choices. So many people never heard of the sleeve of the DS and they could have been the best tool, IF they had known. I wish all the insurance companies covered them both.......but we're getting there!!! Us lil stomach people are becoming more popular

Hello and welcome to BAF

Research, research, and research some more....there are other surgeries out there (i.e. DS, VSG) that you may find appealing. Each surgery has it's pros and cons. Asking questions on an open forum is a wonderful way to get answers, but I found folks were more open when information was shared via emails or over the phone.

But to answer your questions....

1. The band was my initial choice. However, both surgeries come with risks and that concern was quickly removed from the equation.

2. I ultimately chose RNY because I wanted my weight loss sooner than later. Bandsters do lose slower, but if they are successful, their ending weights are typical of a RNYer. Now for discipline? Chile, having the RNY is no joke...it's a tool that you have to work hard to keep happy.

Welcome!

I chose the Lap-band because I was delusional enough to believe that I was not big enough for RNY/Bypass.  Clearly, I was.

A few things that made the case for me were that the band was less invasive, it afforded a more normal lifestyle, and it's adjustable.  I like the fact that at four years post-op I can have my level of restriction adjusted.

I chose RNY because it was permanent!!! I have battling my weight my whole life...took it off, only to have it come back with some friends, ya know? I knew lots of people at my job who had RNY with fantastic results, so that was a factor as well.
As for the band...the people I knew IRL hadn't had much success with it, honestly. Of course, after finding this website, I know now that is NOT the norm. I really didn't want to deal with the maintenance, as in the fills and unfills if need be. Bandsters have to be WAY more disciplined (my opinion).

1. Did you chose lap band over RNY because the decreased risk of complications and the fact that its not a permanent procedure? I chose the lapband because after weighing pros and cons, I felt that it was the right surgery for me. Yes the lapband can be removed if you have complication, it is intended to be permanent, meaning once you get to your goal, doctors (most anyway) does not go in and remove it.

2. Did you chose the RNY over the lab band because you wanted to have less of a dependency on yourself as compared to the lap band that I have heard requires a enormous amount of discipline? Contrary to what some may think, the RNY requires just as much discipline as the lapband, maybe not right away but down the line and especially if one does not make it a lifestyle change.

ladyRed , Welcome to the OH & BAF family!

I choose RNY b/c I was more interesting in an pernanment "tool" not solution to assist me with my weight problem. As we all know wls is only a "tool" that we us to help us loose the weight. I like a lot of others have battled the bugle for many years of my life. My lap band did not interest me b/c I did not like the idea of going back & forth for adjustments as they become necessary, though adjustments can be posititive(that would be an indications I am losing weight)! However for me it became more defining moment when I looked at myself in my mirror, my health problems related to my weight, etc. Then I began to think "Hey what "REAL" positive changes can I may in my life to make sure I have a life. As we all know the weight, at least too much of is never a good thing! So in thinking about all of that & talking with my VERY SUPPORTIVE hubby & family, I made the decision that has change my life forever!

I also choose RNY b/c I like the fact the doctor is actual hands on in my body performing the procedure as opposed to lascproisic(sp) RNY. But to each his/her own. It's a life changing, life style changing decision that you must be FULLY comfortable with. Please believe me when I tell you, it truly helps to have a GREAT SUPPORT SYSTEM, such has family , friends as of course, OH/BAF!

I wish you the very best your weigh loss journey. I only recommend that you fully educate yourself on whichever procedure you choose, the doctor,  the hospital and most important.....MAKE SURE YOUR LIFE IS IN ORDER WITH GOD!!

BE BLESSED,

C LADY D
