You are having a sleeve... I am 7 months out. Looking back, these are my suggestions:
1) What is the recovery time?
2) Most surgeons will go ahead and repair a hernia if you have one when they go in to do the surgery, This is important because if you have a hernia your recovery time will be different that if you don't. Will he go ahead and fix it if he finds it? Will there be extra costs associated with fixing the hernia and how are those costs billed?
3) From an insurance standpoint, if you are self pay and your own medical insurance will be used in case of emergency (hernia or other complications) - what will your obligation be. (for me, the Hospital used for my VSG did not take BCBS so, these costs were considered out of network i.e. I had to go back for 1 day because I was dehydrated - 1 week after surgery and BCBS covered it as out of network.)
4) Does he recommend that someone stay overnight with you in the hospital?
5) What will they do to prevent blood clot after surgery.
6) Importance of the pre-op diet i.e. realistically what is he looking for you to do?
Hope this helps. Let me know if you additional questions!
Do you use drains? How long will they stay in?
What kind of IV line do you use? ( some surgeons use the kind that goes in your neck and you have to get it in the day before)
Is the hospital room private? Can you pay extra to upgrade to private? ( for example Kennestone does not do private as a standard, but you can pay $30 to upgrade to private. To me it would be worth it)
If you are scheduled for laproscopic and there are complications, will he automatically convert to open or cancel the procedure?
I would also ask if I can tour the bariatric wing of the hospital to check for cleanliness, modern facilities, etc, and to be familiar with where I'll be when I wake up. They let pregnant women do this, so they should let bariatric patients take a tour too.
