Dalexis: I would not have been upset at his use of the word Negro, I know tha is from a different generation being that she said he was older, I would have been upset by his condescending way of speaking about them letting a negro in the white house like it belongs strictly to them.

This morning I was reading the Washington Post and I had to shake my head.  It was talking about all the folks coming to DC for the inauguration and it read...."While it's great to be part of history, particularly on an occasion as momentous as the inauguration of Barack Obama, America's 44th President and its first half-black one......."

HELLOOOOOOO, Since when do we describe someone as half-black? Bi-racial yes, BUT half-black?? give me a freaking break already

LaVerne,

Ur right about the condescending thing.  The unfortunate thing is that there are a myriad of them who think that whatever right / privledges we've fought for and won all these years are things that are "granted" by the "kind, gentle massas"

Another unfortunate thing is that there are also those who seem to think that the only "Americans" are white Americans.  Anyone else is a foreigner / immigrant/ illegal alien, etc.  Never mind the fact that the only true Americans are those who's lands were snatched from them.

That the president was describes as "half-black" is comical in that if the kkk were to take a shot at him, i sincerely doubt they would acknowledge the "half-white" part of him. The thing is, the term "bi-racial" is a relatively new one.  I remember when I was growing up, "half-(fill in the blank)" was used all the time.  In the newspaper, its almost as if they want to acknowledge him as the first black president of the united states, but not quite all the way black; like the paper wants to "claim" him as one of their own.  Sort of.  lol.  Oh well.

He was out there bad! Unfortunately, some people just don't know any better. I'm not excusing their actions or making excuses but I honestly feel sorry for some older people who have been brought up to think things like that are ok. I think you should try to make arrangements so that you don't have to deal with him in the future, if possible. I had an instructor that said "that was back when N*ggers weren't allowed to buy homes" during class. I wasn't in the class that day but of course everyone felt compelled to share his ignorance with me. I told a superior that he should talk to him because if a formal complaint had been launched he would have been fired. I wanted to go push his old (80 y/o) self over and leave him well but I took the high road.

Since I graduated last month though, I might go back and egg his cadillac!

I think being a workplace situation with someone you don't have to have regular contact with and that isn' t in a supervisory position, you did the right thing.  Sometimes its not worth the energy needed to deal with such ignorance.  Now if the same thing were to happen OUTside of work..I don't think my response would be to reply with such temperance.

Trina, that sounds like a I email I received recently. i couldn't help but laugh when I read your post. You did well by not reacting. That would have proved HIS perception of blacks to be correct!

A stranger was seated next to a little black girl on the airplane when the stranger turned to her and said, "Let's talk. I've heard that flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger."

The little girl, who had just opened her coloring book, closed it slowly and said to the stranger, "What would you like to talk about?"

"Oh, I don't know," said the stranger. "Since you are a Negro, do you think that So-called President Elect Barack Obama is qualified for the job?" and he smiles.

>

"OK", she said. 'That could be an interesting topic. But let me ask you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff - grass -. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, and a horse produces clumps of dried grass.  Why do you suppose that is?"

>

The stranger, visibly surprised by the little girl's intelligence, thinks about it and says, "Hmmm, I have no idea."

>

To which the little girl replies, "Do you really feel qualified to discuss President Barack Obama... when you don't know sh*t?"

First of all Trina!!

We all say what we think we would do if confronted by comments like that or someone that was being purposely racist/prejudice, but most (including myself) would have just been so in shock that I wouldn't be able to speak AT ALL!  Its probably because out here in Cali we are the LIBERAL state, so that type of thing is so under the microscope and peeps like that tend to TRY and be really covert about it.
