I am considering having VSG done in Mexico this spring, and am looking at Dr. Aceves or Dr. Alvarez.  I have been lurking on OH for a few years now...and have been lurking on BAF for a few weeks.

(I have to say, you guys are HILARIOUS!!!)  Back on topic, I have been researching long enough to feel comfortable that both doctors are great and highly recommended, but I would really like to get the Black perspective on experiences with surgery in Mexico and, more specifically, surgery with these doctors.

Any insight you guys can provide would be great.  Even if you didn't have the VSG, that is fine....I am more concerned about about the overall surgical experience.

Thanks in advance - for the responses and for all the smiles that you guys give me....because every day WITHOUT FAIL yall post some off the wall ish.

Hey there!!!  Well - I can't say much on your topic, really.  Had RNY here in the states.  I personally wouldn't even consider an out of country thing because of the risks - even with the Michael Moore movie showing other countries can get it right better than the US - I'd perfer to let a fellow citizen **** me up - if that's what's gon happen.....

HOWEVER - I have heard quite a lot of good things about some Mexican and South of the boarder docs - I think there is a forum on here for that and/or a lot of folks in the main board got feedback.

Good luck to you!!!! Don't be a stranger!!!

Mack Mama,

I definitely won't be a stranger....I think I am hooked now...I tell you, y'all crack me up.

Re: the other boards - I live on those, as well.  I stay on the VSG board and the Mexico board.  I really want to hear from some "colored folk" on how their experiences were.  Not that I don't put credence in everyone's experiences...because absolutely I do....but, I just want to hear as much as I can from as many perspectives as I can....

Hi Dee,

I am also pre-op and will be going to one of those two doctors in April of this year. They seem to both have great reviews from patients. I've been on OH for approx. 6 mos. now. and one of the things that I did notice is that Dr. Alvarez patients typically report that they don't have any or very little pain after surgery. I like that. Anyways good luck with your research !!

I am shooting for April, as well....and am also in NY....so, maybe we can keep in contact on that.  What I like about Alvarez is that he sews over the staples so there is like almost no chance of a leak.  My only issue with him is that the hospital is so dang old.  I had brain surgery years back, and so I like to make sure that I am in a facility that has all the bells and whistles....just in case.  At the same time, I done had brain surgery - skull cracked wide open and doctors playing all up in there for over 8 hours - so I tend to take surgery pretty lightly.  His reviews are really good, but my family would have a fit when they got off the plane and we were brought to some old rickety hospital.  My mother would probably fight me in the parking lot....screaming, "Oh HELL NO!!"

Yeah, let's keep in tou*****ase you decide to go to MX. I'll PM you. On the other hand I liked Dr. Aceves because his hosp. is state of the art. I know what you mean when I even mention MX my DH and mom is like, that's not happening. Let's keep in touch.

One of my good friends also used Dr Alvarez, hasn't had problems  and looks fantastic. Search MarloT. She doesn't come on here often.
