Girrrrl I TOTALLY understand and NO you are NOT being a ******
My Father passed right after the holidays 8 years ago,
but for the past 13 (yes 13) years I have been constantly going against the grain. I come from a family who are really into the materialistic aspects of Christmas. My issue is this:
Firstly, I am single with no children, on a fixed income and cannot afford to buy for everyone. My brother and sister have spouses and children and that's too damned much money for me to spend. They and their spouses all rake in professional salaries. It is VERY stressful. My mother went bankrupt 3 years ago trying to keep up with that shi* . I have suggested that we adults DRAW NAMES and then everyone purchase for the children. They refuse, yet get their drawers in a bunch each year when I do not bring gifts for all. Damned that.
Well this year I put my foot down once again. I get a call from my sister-in-law last week telling me how offended she is that I will not be at their home for dinner. Once again I felt like you, BULLIED into celebrating due to some rsvp mess. Then mama is here at my home and wants to go. I think that I am going to call my sister to pick mama up tomorrow and I stay home as planned.
I would leave town each year at Christmas time, but we always get all of this snow and ice preventing me from even running away.
Hang in there.
