The New White House

I was thinking last night after seeing another picture of the Obamas just how different things will be when our new president takes office. I took a look at Michelle's hair and thought, "Hey there just might be a hot comb up in the white house". So my kids and I were talking and here are the things that we thin will be new in the white house. What items do you think will make their first appearance in the white house?

Hot Comb
Hair Grease
Lotion (not for scent but for ash reduction)
Shea Butter
Loc's

Please don't take this as me jumpin on you personally.... BUT.....

WHY do we have to consider this?  I mean - did anybody sit around and talk about how many BOOKS were being REMOVED from the White House so Bush wouldn't feel intimidated?  How many 'cue cards' had to be placed around for his dumb azz? 

did we talk about how many beer/liquor bottles made it to the spare bedrooms for the alchie azz daugthers?

Why would THIS be the first time a hot comb made it in the white house - didn't you know Thomas Jefferson was RENOWNED for hitting up the help?  I am SURE one of those chicks had to 'tighten' up they shiot before tippin out the Lincoln bedroom.........

Can we talk about some more enlightened shiot?  I'm just sayin......

I did talk about that dumb azz Bush in the  white house. It is just fun and we can get enlightened shiot tomorrow.

that's the problem with US - we always 'waiting till tomorrow' to be enlightened and indulging in the intellectually pointless today..........

Not taken personally but let me try to address this correctly.

First off, please note that nothing I listed was of a derogatory nature.

Second to answer the reason we consider the things like this is because for the first time we have a president that we can IDENTIFY with. Michelle looks like my mother in some pictures. The girls have hair like my girls. Of course we like to discuss things we can identify with. As  for the hot comb...the help is not the same as the president's family.

I for one an proud that we have a president in office that not only can I identify with on political view but on some basic constants in my life. I'm glad that my son will see a president with his skin tone, hair , etc.

When my son votes for the first time, he will be voting while a black president is in the office. My children will never have to think it is not possible for someone with their skin tone or hair texture or someone who has to press their hair or put it in locs can never be in the white house...you think that's not enlightenment?

didn't say any of it was deragatory.  No need to note it - it's a given.

WHY aren't we talking about the fact that along with the first BLACK man - we are seeing the first BLACK pres of the harvad/yale (don't remember which one)  law review in the white house?

Aren't there some more groundbreaking things than hot combs  and cocoa butter to identify with?  And actually, for ME - Michelle don't look like NOBODY in my family - we are all high yellow!  She looks like my friends' mamas......

What *I* identify with is the fact that we have TWO highly educated, highly functioning, business minded Blacks in the White House - not a husband who does a lotta shiot and a wife that just does charity - Michelle can get out and make her paper too - like most of the professional Black chicks i know - that's what I identify with. 

There are loads of commentary on hot combs and lotion - not a lot on the OTHER aspects that we *can* identify with - just a comment on why THOSE things aren't so talked about. 

 

 

 

To me the things you talked about are the "givens" those are things that anyone can look up. And are also things that many people can identify with. I identify with black professionals...i am a black professional.

However as i said, i was having this conversation with my children, ages 5, 10 and 15. Although they know they can grow up to be anything, they do get a kick out of the smalls things and to be honest, for me, the small things matter just as much as the big. I'm not discounting any of the major accomplishments simply sharing  a family conversation on a light note.

The other things are discussed over and over and over; Sometimes though, people need to just recognize posts such as this for what they are... Entertainment.

So folk can't look up a hot comb?  Is it really more obvious that Obama was formerly president of the law review than the fact that Michelle Obama uses a relaxer?    Ok - that's a new one for me.  I will need to refresh myself on 'givens'.............

I talk to my daugther (9) about the Obama's having a dog.  she wants one - I refuse - she's trying to 'edge' me on it since the PRESIDENT has one.... LOL!!!!  She's tricky like that - thinks the whole first Black President will get her a puppy......

I totally get the 'entertainment' thing - from my perspective, I see more 'entertainment' than the 'other things' - obviously your perspective is different.
