I think it's all about the presentation. Stuff like this always reminds me of the episode on The Cosby Show when Vanessa brought Dabness Brickey home to meet her parents with no warning. As Mr. Huxtable said (paraphrasing here) I could present you with all of your favortie foods, everything that you could imagine, the steak, the potato, and all of the trimmings. If I give it to you on the lid of a garbage can would it still be the same?
In my mind I try to give people things that I know they would enjoy/like (maybe this was her thought since she asked if Jayla liked cereal). I would not be offended by the gesture if it seemed genuine. I am offended when people say "I didn't want it so you take it". I don't want your trash!!!! I don't give people things that are not of my own personal standards.

The question that I am asked most often:
Is that your hair??????
A Phenomenal Woman who doesn't have to Ego Trip to Still Rise: Pretty women often wonder where my secret lies...I am a woman, phenomenally....that's me!!!!!

Perhaps you were the first person that she saw that she knew to have a child(ren). It sounds to me that like some she just didn't want to waste food and probably didn't think past that fact. I know that anytime I want to get rid of something so that it is not wasted, I bring it set it in out kitchen and the dudes will eat it. I'd guess either you are taking the offering to another level...or she realizing there is tension attempted to dead it and failed.
Like someone said it's the "presentation" it may not be her actions or even what she said but HOW she said it that bothered you. Often the actual words are not as factual as the tone and body language of the messenger.
I feel you, I wouldn't give my child an open box of cereal from someone I don't like or trust. I don't want things from people I don't like or trust. Does she know that you can't stand her? Maybe she was trying to be nice??? Trying to suck up to you??

I would be offended but I would have taken it to be polite. And just let it sit right there...in the open on my desk.
I dont feed opened items to my family like that. I mean I would have to know you real well...I mean really well. And even if I took it, I would prolly say something like, I hope you was not digging when you decided you aint want this...
Or something crazy but then, there are special people I can say that to as well, and they would not be offended.
It is good not to waste it. And it may have been a goodwill gesture. Who knows? But I know my family would not have eaten it.
A food bank would not disperse an open container of food. Then dont gib it to me.
