I had my surgery done open and walking was very hard for me at first. However, my doctor encouraged me to walk as much as I can right away. I would suggest taking it slow though, no need to jump to 30mins too quick. If you are still weak walking outside might be a little risky, at least on the treadmill you can stop when you need to and not worry about being unable to make it back home.

10 minutes is good. You might wanted to take several short walks throughout the day. Thats what worked for me. Plus I had issues sleeping so I would drag my roommate out in the middle of the night to explore the apt complex.

Everybody's different. Prob for the first 2/3 weeks I kept it simple in the house or short walks with the dog. At 4 weeks I kicked it up a notch and started jogging/power walking on the treadmill. I had already been cleared by the Dr. for cardio activities. He actually thought the treadmill was good.
