You would be absolutely surprised how many people don't know this, but my point is the ignorant ass response I got from the people I was discussing it with,  and these are people in academia.

Tolerance by Affiliation. 
When straight people personally or publicly know a gay person they are more likely to be tolerant of gay people, which will help in eliminating the sting of gay stigma.  That is why some famous people come out, to serve as a point of reference when issues of acceptance are on the table.  ex.  prop 8, prop 6, and others.

Lee, Lots of people goes around with blinders on if they look and listen they'll hear a lot of things people are saying.  I'm a people person don't care what you are you treat me like people and I'll do the same for them. I hear lots of people talking some days a lot of junk about gay people I just walk off because if not, I'm going to oneday either kick as* or get mine kick for my big mouth.  The older I get the less I can stand some of the foolish things come out of people mouth.
