If you could...would you...why?

I have been waiting since 2001 to have WLS.  After many hours of researching and watching others who had different procedures done, I finally bit the bullet to go for my own surgery.  It took almost a year to gather information and appointments for various tests.  I was approved with very little effort due to medical issues that my insurance company at the time understood the important need for me to improve my health.  While waiting for my date, I found another procedure that I felt would be better for me.  I consulted with another doctor, he agrees and we go for approval......shouldnt be a problem since I was approved before right?  Wrong!!!  The insurance company sent me through hell and back  and back again.  Fast forward to Nov 2003 I start having some medical issues that carry over to 2004  Went out on medical leave due to an on the job injury (severe capal and cubital tunnel syndrome).  Couldn't use my hands very much at all....simple stuff like writing would cause horrible pain and spasms.  Had to postpone WLS.  Fast forward to 2006 went on vacation and was in a car accident...hit my elbow...more pain and meessed up my neck and back.  Fast forward to 2008 almost 2009...I have been waiting to get into a WLS program and should be in by April of next year.  I just found out that once I am in it may be another 6-18 months if approved for a surgery date plus there are some out-of-pocket costs as well.  I have entertained the idea of doing self-pay in Mexico ($12k).  The lowest cost that I have found in my area is about $25k.  My biggest concern about going to MX is my daughter.  What happens to her if something happens to me being that I am a single parent?  I can't get that idea out of my head.  Another concern would be that I would have to go alone.  So my question friends is this:  What would you do?

Kenya.......I don't know why I thought you had already had the surgery. Well, if it was me I would tough it out with the insurance company till that was def a no go. If it does an out you could use the money for something else. I hope everything works out for you babe, you deserve it!

Fight!  The insurance company will get weary, and if you still want the surgery you told me about, *I* would rather it be done in the states.  But if you decide on Mexico, between family and friends there is no way that you would have to go it alone!

I think I have reached my "weary point" with them.  I am soooooo trying to hang in there.  Believe me, I am fighting as much as I can.  I have even been trying to come up with some off the wall solutions to make all of us happy...like doing self-pay for part and letting the INS cover the hospital fees.  I have been working on this for a longggggggggg time.

Thanks Nicole!!! Your doctor comes with very good recommendations.  He is one that I have looked into.  Unfortunately for me, he doesn't even accept my insurance.  I am still working on his office though....lol.

I would go ahead and get in to the WLS program in April and follow the rules of the insurance company to get approval. Based on the fact that you have health issues I believe you'll be approved and it could very well be sooner than the latter of the 6-18 mos. Praying & claiming you get your approval and surgery date in 2009!!

I thought you had surgery already too!
I agree with Shani, I would go through the process with the insurance company.  Your out-of-pocket cost must be lower than paying outright.  The wait time may not be as long as you thnk.

The prospect of going to Mexico alone would deter me.

My best to you on your decision....
