Have second thoughts about my surgery on Tuesday

Your handle says it all "Closer to my dreams" -- you are closer to WLS surgery and your are closer to taking the bar exam.  Ask yourself if going on another diet will take you closer to your dreams.

Many had second thoughts about the surgery and that is a normal feeling.  I didn't have any because I had researched it and was very ready NOT to be fat ever again -- so far so good.

Stop talking to yourself -- as someone said plug up your ears.  Start thinking positively.  Think about how sleak you're going to look in that lawyer suit when you are representing your first client.  Discrimination against fat people exist -- even if you are dressed to the 9's and have a serious resume you want get the job because you are overweight.  So have this surgery, continue to study for the bar and pass it -- and then go out and get that legal job you desire in your nice blue sleek suit.

Stay POSITIVE, STAY STRONG

Thanks so much.  I really appreciate what you said.  It is stressful being overweight, and looking for jobs.  I used to think I wasn't going to get a job because I was overweight.

And sometimes people aren't hired because of their weight.  I mean if two people have the same qualifications and experience and the only difference is one is smaller and the other obese -- they are going to give the job to the smaller person.

When I returned to work after WLS people were acting as if they were seeing me for the first time.  People I wasn't even on first name basis with started speaking to me.  My partner had the surgery and she noted how differently people treated her.  I feel more confident going to a job interview ( I was confident before) knowing that physically I'm a different person and in some ways mentally you become different as well.  All of a sudden people want to talk to you -- mostly about how much weight you've lost, how  you feel, no side effects -- things like that.  I don't get offended because during the course of the conversation they let it be known that a close relative is considering having the surgery or has had surgery.  But you will notice how people treat and look at you.

Don't second guess yourself -- live out your dreams for in 2008 we're getting things straight and in 2009 it's all going to be FINE!

If everything is aligning then this very well may be your time to pursue WLS. I know I said it on another post but I'll say it again. I didn't have any pre-surgery issues. No diabetes, no high blood pressure and I wasnt on any pills. I just simply wanted to lose weight. I was tired of being the big cute chick. I can be undecisive at times. Yet, I had to make the decision that I didn't want to lie to myself anymore. I had dropped of weigh****chers 3 times, I tried dieting on my own and lost but found the weight again. I had jitters up until the day of, before I went under I said "God, you will be done," and I just let my fears go.

Go Well,

My response is...dont wait until you do have diabetes, heart problems...sleep apnea...sore knees...or anything else. Either way, we know your heart is being overworked each day you remain with your current weight. After weight loss, this damage cannot be undone. You can do better but it cannot be undone.

So on Tuesday, you get up, lotion up well and take yourself to the hospital and let it do what it do. You wil not regret it.
You will have other stressors to replace this one at another time. Trust me, you will not have a shortage of stress. In a few weeks, if your primary worry is why you have only lost 50 lbs. then that is a mighty good problem to have.

Wish you well!

I don't thing there has been one person that has not felt the same as you.  We have all wanted to back out.  IMO, if you do not have this feeling a time or two than you are not ready to have the surgery anyway.  It is a big decision and not one to be taken lightly.  What you are doing is healthy and normal.
I nearly backed out a few times, but after 2 years out I am sooooooo glad that I didn't.  Even after a complication that required another surgery recently, I would still do it again.
It is of  course your choice, but I wanted to at least let you know that we all have felt it beforehand and it is normal.
Please keep us informed of your decision.

Ultimately, regardless of what anyone says, the decision lies with YOU!  However, having concerns are normal and just. As with any surgery there are RISKs. So you think, am I being vain? Yada, yada, yada....

However, there are risks in riding/driving a car; a motorcyle, hell, there are risk in walking.

I, too, will tell you, WLS is NOT the easy way out. It only provides a tool. A tool that pretty much ensures that for the first 36 months, you will lose weight with little effort (that is not true for all GB patients), if a healthy eating regimen and consistent workout regimen is not developed, you will gain some, if not all, of the weight back.

I refuse to tell you to shush the little voices in your head. On the contrary, I say, WRITE them down....and then decide what is best for YOU!

I am wishing you peace of mind in your decision, Doll!

I focus not on my disabilty; my focus is on my ABILITIES.

JUST LIKE YOU HAVE HEARD, WE ALL HAD THOUGHTS OF NOT GOING THROUGH WITH IT WHEN IT GOT CLOSE TO THAT TIME TO HAVE SURGERY AND ULTIMATELY IT'S ALL UP TO YOU.  EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT AND HAVE THEIR OWN ISSUES BUT ONLY YOU KNOW IF THIS IS SOMETHING THAT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO COPE WITH OR NOT.  YOU WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN AFTER THIS.  HAVE YOU TRIED MAKING A LIST OF PRO'S AND CON'S MAYBE THAT'LL HELP IN YOUR DECISION.  I WILL KEEP YOU IN MY PRAYERS AND HOPE THAT EVERYTHING YOU CHOOSE IS BEST FOR YOU IN THE LONG RUN.
