CONGRATULATIONS CHELLE !!!

This is indeed a "Pileated Woodpecker".

(Props to Ms Ang who actually came up with the answer first...but on the BL. She also recognized the bird as being a male.)

When I'm leading bird hikes...I love it when one of these woodpecker makes an appearance. Folks are usually awed by them. They'll say stuff like..."Dayum...I didn't know woodpeckers got that big"...LOL. These are indeed "huge" woodpeckers. (And when they bang on a tree...it reminds me of the sound of a 50 caliber machine gun firing.)

Below is a pic of a male and a female. You'll notice that the male has a "red" mustache...and the female has a "black" mustache.

i wouldn't worry about him DD...he's probably fine...(that particular bird has a large territory that they hang out in.) BTW: if i use your bird for this afternoon's quiz...YOU CAN'T PLAY...LOL.
