I was perusing a few job ads and this was mentioned.  I know the basics of what it is, but what do you use it for and how would you get started in learning it?

Sorry Hershey, I don't have an answer for this, but when you find out, let me know... I'm curious too!

SAP is a totally customizable application - I have used it for HR, general business billing and as a total data warehouse for all business processes.  Beyond the basics of it being a Windows based transaction that parcels data out of a central 'warehouse' into fields designed to execute a desired task - not sure there's a lot to 'learn'.

You might find some resources for classes on the basics in Google or whatnot - depends on how it's being deployed in the organization.  End user details are typically very specific to the business tho.  Only real classes are for SAP programmers, I think.......

SAP is so broad......I think it depends on what it was set up to do. I would suggest you just read up about it.
We live by SAP at Cardinal. However i'm sure what we do in SAP won't be what others do in it. Google it is the best suggestion I can give you.

I understand it's broadness and it's customizable factor.  Was SAP something you knew prior to working at Cardinal?

I know you asked Baker - BUT...... I worked with SAP at four different companies - each one was different - so different that the training I got didn't transfer to any of them - but I knew how to 'get around' in the application based on my first exposure.

What I have experienced is that if SAP experience is asked for in relation to a job - they are looking for how imbedded it was in the organization you learned it in.... i.e. if only for HR functions, a job that has it as the primary system of record may see you as more of a training opportunity.

Ok - I'll shut the **** up now... LOL!!!

That's what I wanted to know.  My job doesn't use SAP, everything here is completely tailored to the organization.  HR uses Lawson,  Accounting uses Siemens software, EPIC etc.

So since I've never been exposed, I just wondered if there were classes I could take to make myself more marketable to other organizations.

Wow people are still using Lawson? I used SAP at my last job. We used it for ERP, CRM, HR and data warehouse. My former employer is also one of the leaders in implementing SAP. If you're trying to work on that side, you definitely should check out a program for it. Here's a link provided by the company.
