'Day without a gay': Supporters of gay marriage encouraged to call in sick to work to protest Prop 8

Forget that phoney stomach bug or make-believe migraine.

Same-sex marriage supporters are urging people to skip work by "calling in gay" on Wednesday as part of their campaign to overturn Proposition 8.

The first ever "Day Without a Gay" is being organized to show the nation relies on homosexuals and to raise awareness of the drive to legalize gay and lesbian marriage.

"We are all for a boycott if that's what brings about a sense of community for people," said Sean Hetherington, a comedian and personal trainer who came up with the idea with his boyfriend.

While organizers are encouraging people to skip work, they are also urging them to use their gay day effectively and spend time volunteering.

"You can take away from the economy and give back in other ways," Hetherington added.

Day Without a Gay will coincide with International Human Rights Day, and the idea for a gay workers boycott is modelled on similar stoppages by Latino immigrants.

Hetherington and his partner, Aaron Hartzler, came up with the idea after reading that furious gay-rights activists were calling for day-long strike to protest the passage of the Proposition 8 in November.

The ballot referendum reversed the state's previous decision to allow gay marriage.

The couple thought it would be more beneficial to encourage people to give their time to a non-profit organization. They they have received hundreds of emails from people looking for volunteers during the "Day Without a Gay."

Their website - www.daywithoutagay.org - has also received more than 100,000 hits in recent weeks.

Not everyone should "call in gay," Hetherington said, urging high school students to stay in class and promising no retribution for people who decide to go to work.

Without ACTION there is no CHANGE.   Putting a rainbow flag on your desk won't drive the point where we need it to go.

As you all know I am a female and gay activist and I am very active in the community.  What a gay person can do is not buy things, don't show up to work, do not go to establishments.   Make yourself invisible.

Mr. B -- Looking good.  I'll bet you would be an inspiration to some of those people featured on the weight loss documentaries on the Discovery Health Channel.

Keep up the Good work

I can't call in -- I'm out on medical until the end of the year.  Don't know if I would do it if I was at work -- I'm out at work as well.  I wonder how they are going to obtain statistics on this?

This was really a bad Proposition and I hope the IRS investigates the Mormon church for using 501 (c) 3 status to raise funds to finance ads on this.  That's what should be happening and that's what the HRC should be calling for.

Personally, I'd settle for Civil Unions -- just give us the 1000 plus rights that the heterosexuals have and call it a day.

But some of the churches want to make the people believe that such legislation would force them to perform same-sex unions and it does not.  Any clergy person worth their salt should be counseling couples for at least 6 to 12 months prior to the wedding date to determine whether or not the couple is ready for such a committment and cleary understands what "marriage" entails.  Clergy persons have a duty as well as a responsibility to the couple and should have the confidence and nerve to say look here -- you guys are on the right track but you're not quite there yet and if the clergy person is not equiped to further counsel the couple then refer them to a certified couples counselor to get the couple to the place they need to be -- that's if they still want to get married.  I've done the same with same-gender as well as different gendered couples.  One same sex couple was so bad I recommended that they go to counseling individually as well as a couple and then come back to me because as of then -- a holy union was DEFINITELY OUT OF THE QUESTION.

I'm truly interested in seeing how many people that are REALLY going to commit to this! Because what if the employer does not except the excuse "calling in gay" will gays have a Law suit? If some one called our unit and stated that my crack head boss would Fire them on the spot . Will they have legal support because many people are going to face risk of loosing there job which is a shame, because there standing for what they believe in !

In the early 80's there was a GAY OUT and let me tell you there were thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of people flocked in front of City Hall.

You are not to call in and say i'm calling in because I am gay,  you can call in a sick day or something like that.
