A few things about my surgeon that I found out

While I found my surgeon is great at what he does that is a plus.  Some of his procedures got me to thinking.  He does a leak test the day after surgery and if everything is OK he sends you home if you had lap.  Go home twenty four hours after surgery that a little scary to me.  I spoke with some of his previous patients and now that this has happen to them they think it was for the best.  Also he normally only gives two weeks off work if you have lap and a desk job.  Go back to work after two weeks that seems to soon.  I know if you really put your foot down he will give you three weeks.  What do you think? Maybe I am a little concern about nothing but I know people said they were tired for weeks after surgery.  I have to be alert on my job accuracy is a must so I do not want to go back slipping or I will not have a job.

The shorter your hospital length of stay, the better off you are.  Less time for you to be exposed to other peoples' cooties.  Seriously.

Can't speak for everyone, but I had Lap RNY and I was fine to return to work after 2 weeks.  I work for the federal government and had plenty of leave, so I milked it and stayed out 3 weeks.  By then I was stir crazy and ready to get back to a normal routine.  Definitely still a little tired at times, but not unable to work.

My surgeon had the same procedures. I didn't end up going home the next day because my leak test looked a little iffy...so they kept me. But i was ready!! I was so dayum tired of getting poked and prodded....I stayed out for 2 weeks then worked half days for a week just because I had an energy issue....I didn't have any pain that was keeping me from working though.

My doctor recommended 4 weeks off and I'm having VSG. He said most people feel fine in about two weeks but he wanted patients to be able to take the time they need.  I'm taking the whole 4 weeks because I would rather go back to work eating soft food which would be easier to manage at work.  It would be harder for me to keep up with the full liquids and pureed food at work.  I will be eating by the clock and I don't want to be caught in a meeting trying to eat and getting sick.  So it's better I just keep my behind at the house.

RNY on 10/21/08 with
I had the RNY on Tues 10/21 and was released from the hospital Thurs 10/23. My doctor actually said if I wanted to leave Wedns the day after I could. The leak test was the day after surgery and everything looked fine. I stayed the extra day because I just felt more comfortable doing so and my doctor didnt mind.

It is so important that you make your doctor aware of your fears and concerns. At 6 days out I feel fine. There is some discomfort and exhaustion but I am also taking two weeks off and returning on half days only for a week. Unfortunately, my normal work schedule is 12.25hrs a day so I'm requesting to drop down to 8 hours. I'm confident that this will be okay but if I wasnt I am certain once I made my doctor aware of this fear he would extend my time off because it's about how I feel and we all do not heal the same.

If you believe your doctor seems caring and concerned about his patients. Then he should be just as concerned with the healing process. Good luck to you! That day is approaching soon!

I had to stay a little extra because I had swelling but as soon as he could, my Surgeon sent me home.  He said that it is the hospitals that breed the germs which make you sick.  You'll see your Surgeon prior to heading back to work, you'll have the opportunity to tell him that you require more time.  Everyone is different, why stress how much time you get off before you've even had the procedure to know how you feel?
