Topic: RE: my thoughts on Lap Band only Dr.s
 Hi There

Im a 9 yr post op RNY patient... I have for the past 4 1/2 years, worked with Lap-Band patients only...assisting them in their insurance approval process and after care support.  To maintain my 185+ pound weightloss I now eat the same way Band patients do - it works...

Ive been able to live thru and watch the progression of weightloss surgery for a long time.... Lap-Band was not approved in the US when I had surgery.  It wasnt a choice available to me...I wi**** was.  I dont recommend RNY for anyone anymore (although if asked post-op Ill certainly offer all  my support and experience) ...There are too many complications, potential long term risks and health issues, iron and vitamin deficiencies requiring infusions or transfusions, possible osteoporsis and the list goes on....

There are far less risks with Lap-Band....Lap-Band also allows for a more normal way of eating and adjustment to food after surgery.. Initially bypass surgeries allow a patient to lose a lot more weight than Lap-Band because they have the benefit of malabsorption.... After 3 years or so youll see many bypass patients regain a lot of weight because they may have stretched their pouch ortheir stoma and their intestines will have thickened and allowed for absorption of calories... but not the nutrients... so you can end up and Ive seen many who have, obese again and vitamin deficient... And come back for a band over bypass....

Those surgeons who have done bypass and then switched over to Lap-Band only usually do so because they have seen the benefits of BAND without complication like bypass patients have.  They do so because they choose to not because of a negative....

Id be happy to talk to you in person if youd like.  Its a difficult decision -- No pressures no sales and no cost -- just question and answer from someone who has a lot of experience... if you would like.... Thanks

Go to Dr. Terry Simpson's website if he wasn't the doctor you already saw. He only does lapband and gives you lots of reasons why he only does it and only uses one brand (Allergan). He has side by side charts to compare Bands and RNY & DS He used to do other surgeries but feels the band is the best and safest. Yes do your research of course and good luck on your choice.

So I've been on this 3 month diet program my insurance requires and I have my last appointment tomorrow before I can schedule surgery. I went into this whole thing gung ho on getting a lap band but have been persuaded towards the bypass by my surgeons/dieticians/ and basically everyone out of Scottsdale bariatric. I'm still on the fence though. I am scarred about the extra skin thing and hear it is worse with the bypass. I want to lean towrds the band because I feel my problem is really a "lack of self-control" problem and feel it is just the right tool for me. But I do weigh 475 which is why I am being recomended the bypass over the band. I can't decide. Anyone that want's to share their experience on this matter would be greatly appreciated. PLease and thank you all in advance.
Hey,
If all are saying that skin is worse with the bypass then BINGO!  That means you've deflated it better.......lost the fluff!  Lossey goosey skin is a badge of success!  LOL!   Our journey is about tradeoffs.  We trade up for loose skin and then trade up for some well hidden plastic surgery scars!

I had Rny......been in the biz for years and have seen hundreds of lapbanders.....unfortunately...neither can guarantee long term success.  Like Paperboy, I would have had a DS if  I could start over......best long term stats, easiest post-op lifestyle.

Good Luck!  Let us  know how we can support you!

From everything I have read and heard from people on this site, the folks at Scottsdale Bariatric are not steering you wrong.  At that weight with that much to lose your odds of being succesful are MUCH greater with a bypass.  That is just based on the numbers.  I was originally exploring both surgeries and they would have let me go with either but ultimately I decided the bypass was better for me.  First of all, I wanted the malabsorptive components of the bypass to help me with the initial weight loss.  Secondly, the thought of the fills and unfills to hit the band "sweet spot" really seemed like more of a burden than I wanted to deal with.  Also, the thought of a foreign object in my body creeped me out a bit as did the needle stick for the fills.
My weight issues were really derived from a lack of self-control as well, I just liked food and wanted to eat lots of the yummy goodness.  My bypass has given me back control of my life.  I wasn't really hungry for the first 6 months or so, just ate at my prescribed meal times to get in my nutrition.  Now at a year and half out, I eat like a normal small person which was all I wanted out of this surgery.

As mentioned by somebody else, you're gonna have the extra skin no matter which surgery you choose, I think the only reason it might be seen as "worse" with the bypass is you lose weight faster so it will be noticeable faster.  I think in the end a couple years out from goal weight, there isn't more or less skin depending on your surgery type.  If you're gonna have it, you're gonna have it and there is nothing to be done about it except wait and see.

Good luck in your journey.  The doctors at SBC are amazing and I would trust them but ultimately it is your decision.

so i met with a doctor today to discuss getting banded. i have two insurance companies... one of which is great and i definitely qualify!  (BCBS of AZ [PPO] and United [PPO]) but my issue is, i want a doctor that isn't so much concerned on what i'm paying out of pocket... and would rather see it happen.

any suggestions? i just didn't feel like he was interested in my best interest, moreso how soon i could come up with the money.
You do have great insurance so you should be good to go with any of the programs.  You are the consumer.  Find the surgeon that works for you.  All the seminars are free BUT.....not all of them remain free.  Some have program fees attached.

Don't worry so much if a doc seems to have your best interest at heart or not.  Research and find surgeons with happy, successful post-ops and great stats.  Attending support groups around the valley gives you a heads up as to who is loving life and which procedure they had and which surgeon they chose.  The group on Saturday at St Lukes is open to all.

It's a great journey  Be the

I would suggest you meet with another Dr.  You need to be comfortable with your surgeon.  There are many surgeons out there that will accept those insurance and program fees can vary greatly from surgeon to surgeon.  I loved the Dr. that did my surgery and had a very good relationship with him but have stopped referring people over to him because of the fees the co-surgeon fees they started charging people.  For most of us out there the dollars do matter.  Especially now days.

Good luck in your journey.
