Liquid Diets?

My mom had an RNY on November 17, 2008 with Dr. Juarez and she did not do a liquid diet. Why do some people have to do the liquid diet 2 weeks before surgery?

Most surgeons want your liver to shrink so the surgery is easier and less stressful for your body and easier for them to see what they are doing in there.  If you are overweight, your liver tends to be "fatty" and thus enlarged.  The liquid diet helps shrink it down so that the surgery is more successful.

Thank you for explaining that to me. I wonder if Dr. Juarez will have me do the liquid diet. My mom was 66 when she had her surgery. I wonder if her age had anything to do with not doing the liquid diet.

I think it depends on the surgeon.  I had Dr. Juarez in Sep 2006 and did not do a liquid diet.  It is important to lose some weight before surgery so that the surgeon can maneuver around the liver during surgery.

My surgery is scheduled for June 8th. I cannot wait.....

However, I'll be totally honest. I'm dreading the 2-week liquid diet :(
