Topic: RE: Has anyone had the band removed and then gone one to have the gastric sleeve done?
I had my band removed a year ago due to it continually slipping - have now gained 18 of the 20 kilos I lost and am having an RNY bypass on August 25. I thought about a gastric sleeve but am a sweet eater so the fear of dumping is what I need! Good luck, Margie

Hi I had my sleeve done in Feb and started my weightloss pretty much as soon as I started the Optifast diet which was 3 weeks prior to my operation. I have lost a total of 30kg at the moment with only 8more to go. I feel fantastic and havent had any dramas post op whatsoever. I havent heard of any bleeding if you eat too much. I can only say that you will only ever overeat a couple of times and once you realise what your new stomach capacity is like you will stop before you get to that over full feeling. I over ate once and within 5mins it came up and I felt so much better after that. The only other time I chucked was when I ate too fast (easy to do with 2 kids) trying to feed them and a husband and myself. Thats my biggest hurdle having 35-45mins to enjoy my food. Good luck with your operation I can only say that my experience has been totally positive and I wonder why I hadnt had this done sooner. Cheers Kim

Hi Kim, I'm booked to have surgery next month. I'm not sure if you can answer this but do you know if there is any risk at bleeding internally from eating too much? Also, when did you start to loose the weight? How much have you lost now? Cheers Maximus

I had the band put in about 4 years ago and lost a miserable total of only 17kgs and as of today I am back to the weight I started with. I have gone to see my surgeon about a bypass but he has suggested a gastric sleeve resection, which sounds good, but so did the band back then. I will probably make my decision over the next fortnight but would appreciate any advice from someone whose been there and done that.

Hi Andrea. Sleeve is the best thing I have ever done. Had my surgery late November last year and have lost 61kg so far. Let me know if you have any queries. I live in North Queensland and have a couple of friends who have also had the procedure since I had mine done. It's really good to have that sort of support. Leisa

Hi Andrea Two weeks should be fine to have off before going back to work. Have you been on the forum for vertical sleevers on this site? Most of us are on the main sites as this doesn't get much movement, also you will get most of the answers you need as others post them. I had my op june 10th 2008 and have lost 15kgs. Debbie

Topic: RE: 1month of liquids post op
truthfully, liquid is about all you feel like having - appetite usually is gone and eating is such an effort. You need to stick to slops for 6-8 weeks at least - time for the swelling to go down. If you eat something thats not soft it can get stuck in the band. You either vomit or if you have fluid in the band - have to have some removed. If you have no fluid and you keep heaving you can cause the band to slip and need more surgery.. i say stick with the liquid diet as recommended - i stayed on it for 2 meals a day for an extra month as was still having problems eating slowly - so breakfast was sloppy weet bix and lunch was soup - until about 3 mnths post op. Good luck

Hi Andrea Congrats on your decision to make some life changes. Bariatric surgery is a big step in taking control of your weight. Being terrified of surg is a pretty normal thing - it is good to be aware of all the pros and cons, but dont make yourself ill over it. As for time off work, it really depends what type of work you do. Pain levels should be controlled no problems by day 10, but you will feel really weak and tired - and you shouldnt be on your feet all day. If you have an office job 10 days should be ok - I would say 2 weeks would be better. On your feet work 3 weeks - and then take it easy. The reasons you feel weak and tired are.. normal post op feeling (some people more than others), the biggest is the sudden drop in calorie and food intake - you prob wont be hungry and will have to force the food down in the first few weeks - small amounts often (6 times a day) and it seems to take forever to eat, especially for me.. a busy working mum I could 'speed eat' a meal in about 60 seconds. Sitting for 15 min to eat 1/2 cup of food was so frustrating!..I am much much better now (5 yrs post op) and eat like normal people (maybe a little slower) Good luck - post up your questions so we can help you out PS If you get the date for surg, exercise lots before surgery - it will help reduce your recover time and complications of surg if you are a few kilos lighter..

HI all Congratulations to all those that have had the surgery. I am contemplating having the sleeve done and have spoken to a lovely lady about it. I have read a few messages from people on line and they all seem very very positive. I am absolutley terrified but then have had ops previously and felt the same way. I work full time and basically wondered if taking a week to 10 days will be enough time to have the op and recover well enough for work..
