Topic: RE: I am so happy!!!
Our tiny little outpost is growing one by one. Hello Vanessa!!! I feel that issues concerning a deity are actually irrelevant to my life. "Atheist" is just a label; it does not define my life philosophy of responsibility for my own actions and seeking to find the inherent right or wrong in all matters of judgement. I think it's also about living in a pro-active way. There's a post on the main board right now that is the sort of thing I have to admit I find quite upsetting. A woman is literally pleading with her god to "please please please please" give her the surgery. What is she doing while she's waiting for this almighty to alter her insurance company's policies by divine intervention? Has she thoroughly researched their criteria? Has she gone over the criteria with her doctor? What does she need to do to meet the requirements? Or is she just waiting for "His timing"? How much LIFE do some people miss because they're waiting for their god to make their hopes and dreams come true?

An amazing book to read, Myths to Live By: How we re-create ancient legends in our daily lives to release human potential by Joseph Campbell. It explains the unfortunate necessity of "society" to have religion to be morally upstanding people. Great book! ~Van

Topic: RE: When people say they'll pray for you....
I used to live in a six-unit condo building where I was the association president for several years. I was coming home one day to find a man and two women at our front door (you had to be buzzed in through two doors). They were out proselytizing and had the usual pamplets. I asked them politely to please the premises. The man kept trying to convince me he had to talk to me about something important. I said the building was a condo, I was the association president and I was asking him to leave private property. He got this really funny look on his face. He proceeded to lead the two women to our front lawn where they got down on their knees and he lifted his arms to the sky and began to "pray" for the residents of that building who couldn't see the light of the lord or something like that. I started to get angry. I took out my cell phone and said I was calling the police and they had to leave NOW. So they moved their little performance to the sidewalk. I got the 311 non-emergency operator on the line and let them hear me giving the address and saying we had trespassers *****fused to leave. So they moved out to the STREET! A car appeared down the road so they got up and headed for the next building....

WELCOME TERRI!!!!! I'm just as happy to see you here!! I have resolved to check this board every day so that I can meet everybody who comes by! I think being an atheist is about taking responsibility (and CREDIT) for your actions in the here and now. What we're all involved in with our weight loss is one of the greatest achievements we will accomplish in our lives. We need to have a place to discuss our questions and issues in realistic and practical terms without someone telling us "it's in god's hands." I'm going to get catty for a minute... There's a post on the main board about how some woman thinks that crushing a desk chair at her child's school was a "sign from god." She admits she needs to lose 150 pounds. She sits in a chair designed for an elementary school child, crushes it, and she thinks it's a sign from god. mmmmmmkkkkkkk......

People have the right to think of me in whatever in capacity they like. If it makes them feel useful, the so be it. Who am I to ruin their fun. I know they probably do not anyway. If everyone prayed for everyone they said they were going to pray for, then there would no time for real life stuff. They say it, but not everyone means it. I try to not be offended, because most have good intentions. It does get tiresome though.

I bugged for the longest time for this board. I sometimes have difficulty dealing with all of the prayers and praising God that goes on the main board. I am a very firm, educated Atheist. It will be nice to have some conversation when I get some time. Welcome everyone!!!!

Ohhhhhh. The Bible Belt. *shudder* You are a brave soul! I too wonder about those people who just swallow dogma, unquestioned. I don't say this often but that sort of thing tends to make me assume such people are not terribly intelligent. I once tried to ask someone like that if she really thought about her beliefs so that she might understand the ways of her god more deeply and even appreciate her religion more. She thought that was unnecessary. If people want to live that, well OK whatever, it's their life. But when they use that attitude to pass judgment on me and others? Thank you NO!!! I had always had my issues with religion but I really started to think about it in college; specifically when I studied psychology and cultural anthropology. It became plainly obvious to me that religion is a purely human construct, aimed at meeting certain psychological, social, and cultural needs. It perfectly explains why every culture has invented deities since the dawn of time. Good luck with your studies and feel free to post any discussion topics that might interest you!

Topic: Hello from the BIBLE belt (ughh)
I live in North Alabama (right smack in the middle of the bible belt) and it is RIDICULOUS how non-religious people get treated here. One of the first questions people ask around here is, "So, what church do you go to?" If you say you don't attend church, people treat you differently--like you have a disease or something. Anyhow, just wanted to say hello to the board. I'm a....well....I'm still in the process of deciding what I believe. I haven't ruled ANYTHING out yet because I'm only 21 and haven't fully experienced the world yet. I am a student of psychology and philosophy, so that helps me look at things objectively. It really bothers me when people just take their religion for face value and explain it all away with "Well, that's how GOD wants it. We can't question it" I'm not sure at this point if there is SOME higher power in the universe, but I don't like organized religion very much because I feel like it is a form of social control. I feel like the people around here, especially, have their heads filled with the herd mentality. They are sheep and they follow whatever religion sucks them in (usually christian in these parts). I've rambled enough I hope this board continues to grow!
