Topic: RE: OT: Horrid grammar and spelling
If I were still a believer in Christianity, I would yell an "amen" at you for this post. Much of the writing on these message boards is atrocious, and that's being generous. I don't think anyone is asking for someone to be killed because he/she didn't properly match an antecedent with a pronoun, but is subject-verb agreement so hard to adhere to when the person is trying to communicate something important? Give me a friggin' break!
What's even more saddening is that children coming up these days are not even getting the rudimentary skills to be even remotely successful in writing. A 17-year-old friend of mine asked me to review his report and to offer suggestions. The seven-page report's being one huge paragraph notwithstanding, his writing was an abomination--missing commas, colons, dangling modifiers, incorrect subject-verb agreement, run-on sentences, red herring statements, etc. I offered him my suggestions on ways to improve the report, and he became offended and decided to change nothing. One week later, he came back to me to let me know mockingly that he received "B" on his paper. My question in response to his statement was, "Tell me the exact name of the school you attend so I know where not to send my children. Also, give me the name, description, and social security number of your teacher so I can put out a hit on him/her. The grammar police need to know about this!" This person should be put out of his/her misery!
I think he's still upset with me though I can't imagine why! Children!

Wait, aren't we supposed to find the sign of god in a face of a child and a sunset? Or wait, is it supposed to be a face of the sun and a set child? Or maybe it's a kitten and a self-cleaning oven (my personal bid). Me forgets in my old age...

Still no sign of an active, meddling god.
I'll update you if this changes.

Topic: RE: this just made me angry...
Liz,
I saw this too, and it really annoyed the hell out of me. I really try not to respond to that type of narrow-minded, rah rah, quick trigger patriotism stuff. I some people are quick to jump on people like us because we question their entire belief system. Just the thought that everything they've based their existence upon might not be true really puts them out of their comfort zone. I've become fairly thick-skinned having to deal with a christian based society.
Sorry it bothered you so much.
Just thought I'd let you know that you're not alone.

Topic: this just made me angry...
this story was posted on the jan. 2006 board and it just made me angry, especially since the post was titled: "some don't know when to keep their mouths shut..."
A Marine was attending some college courses between assignments.
He had completed missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
One of the courses had a professor who was an avowed atheist and a
member of the ACLU. One day he shocked the class when he came in, looked to
the ceiling, and flatly stated, "God, if you are real, then I want you
to knock me off this platform. I'll give you exactly 15 minutes.
The lecture room fell silent. You could hear a pin drop.
Ten minutes went by and the professor proclaimed, "Here I am God.
I'm still waiting. "It got down to the last couple of minutes when the Marine got out
of his chair, went up to the professor, and cold-****ed him; knocking
him off the platform. The professor was out cold. The Marine went back to
his seat and sat there, silently. The other students were shocked and stunned and
sat there looking on in silence. The professor eventually came to,
noticeably shaken, looked at the Marine and asked, "What the hell is the matter with
you? Why did you do that?"
The Marine calmly replied, "God was too busy today protecting
America's soldiers who are protecting your right to say stupid **** and act
like an ********o He sent me."
the whole thread is here: http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/01-2006/postdetail/23907.html?vc=0
and of course everyone's response to this was, yay! great story!!! ugh.

Really, there is only so many ways you can say "There is no God" or "There is no proof of God"
We can't bash religions, nor can we make those that believe in god look silly.
So, there it is.
I wonder... when the board died, did it go to heaven or hell?

Topic: RE: Hey does anybody visit this board?
Hi Barb,
My name is Sherry and I'm a lifelong (42) atheist and freethinker. Frankly, I was kind of surprised - okay, REAL surprised - to even see this topic listed on the website.
My husband, son, and I live in the definitely-NOT-atheist-friendly state of Missouri. This is a lonely and hostile place for heathens like us, trust me! Our only relief is belonging to a freethinker's group in Fayetteville, Arkansas. We don't get down there as often as we'd like, but when we do it's like being let out of an ideological prison cell.
I'm on this website in the first place because I'm a bariatric post-op, about 5 months out. I had a procedure called the Mini Gastric Bypass, which is listed on these forums - so check it out if you're curious. I had an excellent experience (no complications or anything) and I've lost almost 70 pounds to date. It's hard to explain just how much my health and life have improved. I would do it again in a heartbeat! Instead of feeling surgically altered, I actually feel as though I've been repaired - and that my system NOW works the way it always should have.
Well, that's about it from me.
If anyone wants to converse, please give me a shout! I'd love to dialogue with another atheist/agnostic.
Thanks,
Sherry

Hi,
Actually, you're right. We do talk amongst ourselves. This site isn't very friendly for those of us who don't believe. One of our former members hosts a forum here http://www.iamunrecognizable.com/forum/toast.asp
I go there a lot. I think we're quiet because we don't need to recruit and maintain our members. Believers need constant reassurance for their beliefs. Athiests don't give a rat's rear. LOL
