Topic: RE: My Son......The Atheist
Here is where it gets tricky though. He is a strange age and has some pretty strong ideas on expressing himself. Young Atheists need to learn appreciation of life and tolerance for others. Not seeing life beyond death can be grim at times. Having purpose and direction is very important. Children raised in religious households come by this naturally. Us Atheists need to find this on our own thorugh art, music, or our natural abilities. Good for him for taking a stand early in life. Now he has to figure out how to use this to his advantage rather than that teenage self-destruction phase. I would provide him with some reading in that area or direct him to web sites. This developmental period is very important. He needs to understand that being God-less is not about lacking in morality or integrity. I hope he gets that. Much Love, Terri

Topic: My Son......The Atheist
Hello everyone, I just wanted to share something that happened to me a couple weeks ago. My son is 15 yo. He dresse***** has green hair, and hates everything. I have never discussed my atheism with my kids. I just didnt think that was fair to them. My son announced "I dont believe in god" . I looked at him and said "I dont either". The look on his face was priceless! Here he was thinking he was going to slap me in the face with yet another act of defiance. When I agreed with him I took all of the wind out of his sail. Now we sometimes have discussions about religion and I feel comfortable sharing my views with him. I was raised and educated Catholic. Its unbelievable how 40 years later.......I still feel like I'm in big trouble for not believing. Go figure! thanks for listening willby thinsoon

I'm not an atheist because of any issues I might have with religion but I have to admit the vast degree to which religious people disagree with each other is totally ridiculous to me. And they're all so convinced they're the only ones who are RIGHT! It's alternately pathetic and hilarious.

Personally, I'm not going to play some little game with someone who needs to accept the reality that I AM NOT INTERESTED and they need to learn to LEAVE PEOPLE ALONE. If they can't deal with that, that's their problem.

Topic: RE: Atheism in Europe
Hey I like meatballs, I'm ready to go! I really had no idea about this statistic. I'm quite amazed. I would really like to find out what it is in European culture that has led to this. I think that Europeans have a stronger sense of independent thinking in general than we do. History and geography have contributed to that. Imagine living just a few miles from a completely different society, yet being able to retain your cultural identity. Europeans have made the critical connection that what one person thinks and how they live does not have to affect the choices you make for your life. They seem to have applied that to religion and when given a free choice to not follow the pack, Europeans choose in great numbers to be free of religion! I think Americans are under more pressure to conform than we realize.

Or, I've heard that answering the door stark raving naked works wonders too! It's much easier, much quicker, and (if you feel comfortable enough with your body not to stress over strangers seeing it in all its glory), much more fun to watch their reactions!

Very Interesting stats. Lets move to Sweden!!!!! Ahhhhh, what would it be like to live in a society where I am not a freak or outcast because of my non-theism? One can only dream. Terri

Hmmmmm, it is very curious. I have never heard anyone say that christians do not believe JW's are christians at all. Don't they also believe that Jesus came here and died for our sins and that he is the son of God? Isn't that what makes one a christian? I mean if you follow the teachings of Jesus and the new testament isn't that the key? I know that the way they go about it is different than most. I know they study the bible more than any other religion I have ever seen. I have close relatives that are JW's. I will ask them if they consider THEMSELVES christians for my own curiosity. This is another reason I am a non-believer. Even people who agree on the same basic, religious principles cannot accept one another. I know the JW's are very selective and rather judgemental as well. I just do not want to be in the middle of all of that "rightness". Take care, Terri

Terri, I have never posted here, but was reading your post and I have a sure fire method to tell them (regardless of what you believe or don't beleive) to get rid of JW's....because as a Christian, I can tell you we don't consider them Christians at all!!! All you have to do to get rid of a JW is to tell them you want to "share" Jesus with them and then clock them on your stopwatch!! LOL It is hilarious, they are sooo scared of the name of Jesus! If he knocks on your door, hand him a Jesus tract if you can find one and tell him he has been on your heart! I would love to be there if you did it! have a good week, I am not here to convert anyone or anything, just reading. Very interesting conversations.... and its the first time I have been in here for over a month. Deb

Topic: Atheism in Europe
I heard a news story on the radio this week about a survey in Great Britain that found 51% believed in god. That would mean that 49% did NOT or doubted. I have tried to find an article about this and haven't been able to but I did find this which cites many studies: http://www.pitzer.edu/academics/faculty/zuckerman/atheism.html I didn't realize how much higher the rates of atheism are in Europe, especially considering that European countries all have a history of state religion! It's really incredible! Any thoughts on what has contributed to this?
