Topic: RE: R.A. after RNY
I was diagnosed with R.A. about a year out from surgery. My diagnosis came out of nowhere.... no history in my family, symptoms in the past, etc. All of a sudden I had knee pain that wouldn't go away. It got so bad before my diagnosis that i could barely walk without a cane. I had lost about 120 lbs at that point. Now, with all the meds I'm on, I'm feeling fairly regular again.
I take 3 mg of prednisone a day and 20mg of methotrexate a week, I've been on those since May... and just started a humira injection every other week. The prednisone helps most but i hate the way it makes me feel mentally and have been weaning myself down. The MTX is helping I guess. And so far the humira is helping as well (besides giving me horrible headaches for the first two days after my injection).
The research I've done about a connection between RA and Weight Loss Surgery suggests that some people have the R.A. "gene" and it takes a major physiological trigger to 'turn it on' so to speak. My rheumatologist suggested that the huge hormonal changes that came with losing so much weight could have done it. Bummer, huh?! Trading one physical disability for another. Thankfully we live in a time with lots of options for treatment.
Good Luck :)

Topic: RE: osteoarthritis and torn meniscus??/
Hi I recently had problems with my left knee and the films look like bone on bone. I got a shot of cortisone and am ambulating. I see the ortho in Jan. The damage was done to mine due to 330 pounds for so many years wore the meniscus down. Let me know what your MD says about you knees.

Topic: RE: NSAID Alternatives???
My first dose of tramadol was two times a day and it was a total of too much then the Doc gave me a total dose that was less than the two but more than the single dose but once a day (I take it at bed time) It works well and I can stay awake !
I had synvic injections in both my knees a few months ago as they started to bother a year ago, I think they helped me , my Rheumatoligist said I was a good canadate because my knees weren't extreemly bad. I am hoping to put off surgery as long as possible. I am noticing less noise coming from my knees ? (ya know the poping ect).
Good Luck,
Lyn Batt

Talk to your doctor about a lidocain patch, that was the last thing the doctor had given me for my back and knees it helped with out making me feel sleepy all the time.
Hot showers provide a temporary relief they are for pain control so you can stay in them until the heat gets deep into the muscles. We use to use them for labor pain even and they would work well for that.
I use to go to bed with warm rice socks also - they stay warm for hours with less risk of burning you ( as long as you do not heat them to hot in the microwave before taking them to bed) . If it is to hot to lay on your skin let it cool off before use. Take a long tube sock fill about 1/2 full of plain rice, tie a knot or sew open end closed, heat in microwave till warm between 1 to 3 minutes depending on the amount of rice and how cold it starts out being. It can be reheated many many times so you can keep it a long time. You can place it under the covers to "preheat" the bed before you get in ( esp by my feet), then drape it over the parts that ache where warmth feels good after you get in bed. I have also seen these made with buckwheat or with a favorite herb mixed in. I use to have at least three of them when I went to bed in my old house ( my bedroom is much warmer now).

I've been taking glucosamine and chondroitin for years now for problems with my left knee. It takes about 2 weeks to start helping. If it hadn't worked for my Rottweiler who blew out a knee and had surgery, I probably wouldn't have tried it. But jus****ching him, and seeing that he was moving more easily, thought I would give it a try.
I admit readily that I take up to 800 mg of ibuprofen at times to help with some OA pain and stiffness with no problems - and have never had a problem. (I'm a nurse and work in a small but busy hospital in New Zealand, so often spend a whole shift on my feet, and moving people around.) Sometimes I overdo it a bit - like digging around the property to put in the wire for an invisible fence. Ouch.
I had gastric bypass 8 years ago, and I'm 54 now, and I think this whole avoiding NSAIDs entirely is suspect. Never have seen any research that shows gastric bypass people to be at high risk for ulcers from using it - especially if used on an occasional basis.
