Does anyone have advise on how I put forth the preference for the VSG due to chronic arthritis and the need to take Nsaids .
I experience massive swelling in my feet and knees.( some of the joints in my feet are fusing) I have degenerative disk disease in my back.
Tylenol never works because my joints swell and that causes pain . I already use a tens machine , massage, physio. I am in contact with the arthritis association. I have tried acupuncture.
I need a hip replacement and so I take a narcotic which does not help the arthritis at all.
I have lost 55 pounds pre surgery and although there is improvement it's not a lot. (Most studies say I have already lost enough weight to feel any relief I am going to feel in the joints. )
I worry that if I have the RNY I am limiting my ability to treat my arthritis without taking major narcotics to live and I don't feel that narcotics are in my best interest.
I know about cortisone shots but that is not what I want to be doing at my age although I may end up there eventually.
So please, if anyone has advise, wisdom or any research you may have come upon during your journey to share, I would be grateful.
I too have osteoarthritis in both of my knees and will at some point will have to have both knees replaced. (unfortunately sooner than I planned) I also have had numbness in my big toe on my right foot for quite some time. I notice it more when I wear socks and shoes, than in the summer when I can wear flip flops or sandals. My regular doctor has not really addressed the issue when it has been brought up. We always have to fill out a form specifying any issues that we may be having, and I always mark the numbness in my foot and have even mentioned it to him to no avail. I had the sleeve done last year on 11/5/14, HW 389 and am currently at 250ish. Would like to get down to below 200 (ultimately I would love to get down to 150, but would be real happy at 175).

Well a quick update. I had the gastic bypass in april 2014. Two weeks later major complications . had to have a second surgery becausemmy body flipped out a bit from the bypass. It had nothing to directly do with the "bypass" itself. It was just what every body. Needs to always have in mind can happen from ANY SURGERY.Anyways i had a second surgery that left me laid up i n the hospital for over a month. But shortly after a 4 month healing process . i was off and running. Ok not really running. But i was losing the weight quickly. And in november 2014 i finally recieved my hip replacement. It was awesome i was doing so good after the surgery that within 3 months i was riding a bicycle . something i had not been able to do since 2006. I have gone from a wooping 360 plus pounds down to a mind blowing130. I feel great look awesome . and could not have wanted anything more. I recommend the gastic bypass to ALL WHO ARE SUFFERING FROM OBESITY.

i think you are very wise to get some of the weight off before the ortho surgeries. I was in knee PT a few years after a slipped on the ice, I did not need surgery, but the people PTing around me were. It seemed the better overall health they were in, the better progress they made in post-op PT. I'm 58 and think about these things also.
Best wishes,
Sharon
It is really important to consult an orthopedist to answer that question. If the arthritis is advanced and the joint is in really bad shape, someone can do additional harm by "exercising through the pain".
I was one of those people. When I finally saw an orthopedic surgeon when the pain was just getting worse, he chastised me for listening to the "trainer" who told me that if I pushed through the pain it would eventually lessen the pain. The difference in my knees in just a one year period while I was trying to exercise even though it hurt was obvious even to me when he showed me the X-rays side by side!
