You definitely don't want to have a reversal if you can avoid it. Are they thinking this is related to blind loop syndrome? There was a form of arthritis that was very common after the old JIB.

Hi,
You could be right. My bariatric surgeon wants to make sure the cause of the arthritis is related to WLS before he does a reversal. That's why we are getting a second opinion from an elite medical clinic at Cedar's Sinai in Los Angeles. Hopefully the doctors there can either confirm or elminate the link to WLS and we can go forward accordingly.

Topic: RE: Enbrel
Thank you for your help...it's really lessened my anxiety! I'm at the point now where I can't wait to start it despite the risks....this upper back and shoulder pain is getting worse. The Tramadol and Lyrica (on top of the Plaquinel) is not working!! I can't walk, sit or lie down for more than 15 minutes before I"m in awful pain. Lately my knees are hurting too...been a while since I've felt that.
My surgery has been delayed until July (at my request despite my surgeon's reservation) because I just couldn't take the time off from work. I would have lost 3 weeks of pay! So the Enbrel will be delayed until after.
One thing I want to spend some time doing if I can free up the time to do it..is research more on foods that aggravate and/or cause inflammation and ones that help to reduce it. I think this will help me a lot during those flare ups which seem to be more frequent lately.

Have they ruled out plain ol', garden-variety OA? No offense intended, but your avatar indicates you're approaching the age when most people DO have some arthritis. Could it have nothing whatsoever to do with your RNY?
I've had severe osteoarthritis since age 20. You have my sympathy.

Topic: RE: Tylenol Alternatives: What's the story on COX-2 Inhibitors, NSAID/PPP Combo, Arthrotec treatments?
Great post. I have been through the same dilemma: suffer excruciating pain in my joints without anti-inflammatories, or take them and get significant pain relief and increased mobility. For me, I chose to take the NSAIDS for 6 months, developed an Anastomotic Ulcer and am taking the NSAIDS now with two standard meds (Carafate and another). I go in Monday to see if 3 months of treatment for my ulcer has helped. I agree, it's not all black and white. My bariatric surgeon knows I have an ulcer but he also knows my entire situation, and in order to give me some relief from the debilitating joint pain told me to continue to take the NSAIDS with food and the appropriate ulcer meds.

I am three years out of RNY. 8 months ago I developed acute joint pain in shoulders, ankles, and hands. Doctors (PCP, Rheumatologist, podiatrist, Bariatric Surgeon) think sypmtoms are closest to Blind Loop Syndrome, which was a complication of an now-obselete WLS that was performed years ago. Basically, an overgrowth of bacteria somewhere in my GI has migrated to the joints. Antibiotics is the standard treatment, but has not succeeded. My quality of life has decreased significantly and reversal of the RNY is a very real possibility. Has anyone experienced a post WLS onset of arthritis? RA has been ruled out along with gout.
P.S. I developed an ulcer as a result of the NSAIDs for the joint pain. No fun.

I've been on Enbrel since March 2000. I self inject. It is easy and painless. The only biggie with Enbrel (and other biologics) is the possibility of frequent infections. Before Enbrel I couldn't turn a doorknob or insert a key into a lock. It has been a life-changing med for me.

I take both Enbrel and Plaquenil, and have for years with pretty good results. Remicade infusions once monthly really helped, but knocked out my immune system, and I work with kids so that's not an option. I self-inject Enbrel with no problems besides fear after the first few times! Sometimes I miss those NSAIDS, but the weight loss saved my life. Good luck!
Topic: RE: Celebrex- I miss it!
I restarted Celebrex as soon as I was able to take capsules. My concern in this older post was if I would ever be able to take my medicine whole. As a newbie, I was crushing everything. Celebrex's effectiveness is greatly reduced when you open the capsule. Celebrex is a COX-2 inhibitor, a type of NSAID designed to decrease risk of ulcers. After having a conversation with my surgeon, regarding my arthritic pain, he was fine with me restarting. I'm also h. Pylori neg, which lowers my risk of ulcers further.

I wish! My knees, hips, and feet are so screwed I couldn't run if a tiger was chasing me. (*grin*)
