I have read your post and in my opinion it might be genetic but it sometime it occur due to our life style and our eating behaviour. I must suggest you to take calciumand protein rich diet such as milk, fisf, egg green vegetable which give strenght to your bone and muscle. Also do relular exercise related to knee.

Thanks for your answer. After I loose the weight and reach my goal, I will go to the specialist and see what my options are. I want to delay surgery as much as I can.

Sunny,
I've only lost 52 pounds so far but it seems to be making a difference already. I also talked to my surgeon about being so young and the possibility of a second replacement down the road. He said that the second surgery is much less invasive.....they only replace the silicone linings over the head of the femur or the socket, they don't actually have to replace all the hardware. This was a big relief for me...the thought of going through it twice was a little scary.
I do know a few "younger" folks that have had hips replaced and all are very active. One guy I know fractured his in a snowboarding accident. He bikes 10 miles to work each day and back and is very fit....he just makes sure not to do any high impact activities.
Keep in touch and let me know what you decide to do!

Topic: RE: 41 yo and needing a new hip????
I've been in PT for the past two months and that combined with losing some weight does seem to be making a difference. I am in no way saying I have a new hip~but have been at least able to climb a ladder, ride a bike, etc.
My surgeon is looking to get approval from my insurance company to use a trial of Synvisc in my hip. Right now it is only labeled for knees, so not sure if the insurance company will agree for the hip. But he said that it is worth a shot and might buy another few years if they work. Might be something for you to look into....

Hi, I am also in need of a hip replacement. I'm 36 yrs.old, 5'1 and lost 122lbs. the dr. keeps trying different meds with me and nothing seems to help. I also had the steroid right in the joint and still no help. It's my right hip, bone on bone, every night have pain and just not ready for the surgery. My surgeon said due to my age if I have someone at home to help me it isn't need for me to go to nursing home. Good luck with your decision.
Topic: RE: Knee Replacements at age 40??
Hi Everyone! Thanks so much for the replies. Sorry that I haven't posted in so long. I did end up having a total knee replacement on my left knee in March 2010. Everything went well, and then all of a sudden about 4 months post op, I started having a lot of pain and could not bend it as much. Well, do make a long sorry short, it ended up having an infection. I had the replacement taken out in October 2010, and was without a knee for 5 months. I had another replacement put back in in March 2011. I have been doing pretty good so far, with the left, but now just went to the doctor for my right one. They are doing an MRI on it and if they do not find anything tore, then I will end up having that one replaced. To make matters worse, I also have it in my hips. Not sure what to do with that. So hard to beleive that at the age of 40 I feel like I am falling apart.
Topic: RE: What else can I take for my knee
my doctor has me on tramadol and Cymbalta. I have tried Gabapentin and Lyrica both made me gain a lot of weight quickly.. I had to give up the NSAIDs and nothing has worked quite as well. Do you know why your doc says you can't take the tramedol and Cymbalta? I, too am on my feet on concrete 10 or more hours a day and love the Skechers..Thanks for any info about the Cymbalta and Tramadol..
Topic: RE: Enbrel
I've taken Enbrel for many years. You'll inject yourself into your fat, such as the thigh.
Enbrel works wonders, but there are some drawbacks, since Enbrel depresses part of your immune system to modulate PA and RA. You may have more frequent infections and/or longer duration of infection. Additionally, taking Enbrel and other drugs in its class puts you at a higher risk of lymphoma (cancer) since your agonizing TNF-alpha, one of many powerful immune compliments used to naturally fight cancer.

Topic: RE: Question about knee pain
Thank you,
I didn't know it wouldn't be genetic if it was anything but RA. I will tell her that and get a clarification.
I went to a family doctor. He thinks its my knees telling me they have had enough with the extra weight. I told him I started going to Curves 6 months ago. He thinks that hoping on them every 30 seconds there is putting too much pressure on them. He wants me to ride the bike or do the elliptical machine instead.
He thinks that it is an injury instead of arthritis. Mainly because of my age and because they both started to hurt at the same time. He prescribed me an anti inflammatory.
He said if we did an x-ray we would most likely see some narrowing, but nothing major.
I'm definitely try some ice,
thanks again... I hope you get some pain relief soon!!!!

Topic: RE: Question about knee pain
Hi Amy....first off unless your mother has RA, the knee issue isn't genetic, so could be an injury. Ice is the key with knees, especially. I have one knee that needs replaced and it is the one I have injured repeatedly...the first time at 14 when my skateboard hit a rock and I went ass over teakettle and banged up my left knee and dislocated my left thumb. That knee has suffered a lot with tobogganing, skiing, softball playing and 26 years of working on hard concrete floors. Ice your knees to reduce post-injury bleeding into the joint. The blood destroys cartilage and lost cartilage is the reason many of us need knee replacement surgery.
If you haven't had an injury, it might be time to see the orthopaedic doctor for recommendations.
I am up early this morning due to pain (primarily knee, ITband and back), it runs my life. You are young, take care of your joints now so pain doesn't run your life.
