No, I do not take NSAIDS and I have not had my WLS. I've done well w/just Cymbalta, Neuotin and Zanaflex. If I am having terrible pain, I use ice.
I use to take NSAIDS, but my stomach just does not tolerate them, as I am prone to ulcers.
Have you shared your concern w/your PCP and Bariatric surgeon?

What did you take to make the swelling go down, since we're not supposed to take NSAIDS, or did your surgeon let you take those? I had the sleeve WLS 3 years ago, and my doc says I can't take them. The swelling from knee replacement surgery scares me really bad.

Have you had WLS? My surgeon who did my sleeve surgery does not let me take NSAIDS. Do you take those? I'm terrified about having this big surgery without them.
Topic: RE: Having my knee replaced
Help! I need knee replacement, too, and am wondering how I can do this BIG SURGERY without Advil and/or Celebrex. Did you take those? I had the sleeve surgery 3 years ago, but my doc does NOT recomment NSAIDS after WLS. What was your experience?
Topic: RE: NSAIDS and Bariatric Surgery?
I had rouen-y bypass 6 yrs ago and it is the best think I have ever done. I lost and have kept off 106 lbs. My problem is that I have OA and have developed fibromyalgia since surgery and am frustrated that I can't take NSAIDS, I have seen a pain specialist who put me on oxycontin and then methadone with terrible side effects and a horrendous withdrawal. I am now using 5mg oxycodone as infrequently as I can stand. I believe if I could take a NSAID I wouldn't need these dangerous narcotics that get you addicted. Does anyone else out there suffer with fibromyalgia since surgery? If so, how do you cope? Peace to you, Linda
Topic: RE: Polymyalgia rheumatica anyone?
I'm not sure how much help I can be but I've just been diagnosed with PolyMyalgia Rheumatica so I can sympathise!!
I'm 28, so I know all about being too young for this stoopid disorder.
My hips are so bad that most mornings I can't walk, and my shoulders are getting worse every day. I've been for x-rays, have just been for an ultrasound and am being referred to a rheumatologist in the next couple of months.
Sounds like you have a totally full plate! **sympathy** PMR sucks ass. I've been told by my doctor that large amounts of weight loss can exacerbate a preexisting condition of PMR, in other words if I was going to get it at 50, losing 50kg in a few months can bring it forward. I'm not sure how true this is, the research I've done online doesn't seem to support that but thought I'd let you know anyway.
I'm taking an over the counter anti-inflammatory and painkiller until I see the rheumatologist.
Hope that helps somewhat, even if just to reassure you that you're not the only one.
Nic :-)

Topic: Newbie with PsA
Hi all, I am a newbie with psoriatic arthritis, and I am doing a self-pay VSG with Aceves this Spring.
I take Humira every other week, and my rheumy wants me to hold it for 2 weeks pre and post surgery due to the increased infection risk.
It's neccesary, I know, but did going off your biologic cause a flare around surgery time? Just wondering what to expect. :-)
Looking forward to a brighter and lighter 2012!

If an ortho tells you you're too young, get a second opinion.
My original ortho, who had already performed one of my meniscus surgeries, told me that my right knee looked bad and that I'd eventually need to have the entire knee replaced.
A couple of months later, I went to an ortho in another city (and state) who performs partial knee replacements. He examined me, took additional xrays, and determined that I was a candidate for partial knee (Makoplasty).
I had the surgery nearly two weeks ago and am recovering remarkably well. I am 50 years old and had my RNY surgery in August and haven't yet been able to exercise. It was the nurse practioner at the RNY surgeon's office who encouraged me to go ahead and have it done. Her feeling was that without the surgery and thus, without exercise, I wouldn't get as much success and benefit from my WLS. I'm glad I took her advice!
