Best wishes to you. I just had my second knee replaced in January. I am now off of both Celebrex and percocets. I start in the gym in 2 weeks.
Please keep me posted on how you are making out.
Keep up the great job

I wrote a post back in May 2012, asking for advised on which should come first the WLS or the Hip replacement. Well I thought I would give you all an update. I had my WLS an RNY in October of 2012 and so far have lost about 81 pounds.
I have another month and a bit to go and I am now scheduled for my first of two hip replacements on May7th. I am really looking forward to it.
The 80 + pounds has made a huge difference in my mobility but not in the pain. The pain is still quite bad especially at night. I usually need 1 or 2 Tylenol#3's to get to sleep and then I wake up at some time in the night and it is so hard (really painful) just to make it the 8-10 steps into the bathroom to get more painkillers. All of these painkillers cause lots of constipation.
So I am really looking forward to my first hip surgery. The Ortho Surgeon says if all goes well he would do the second hip no sooner than 3 months later. We will see. I really would like to at least another 10 pounds before surgery. Originally I had hoped to be down by 100 pounds but that might be a little ambitious, at this point. But another 10 might be doable.
I go to the gym about 4 times a week and work out on a recumbent cross trainer and in the pool. This helps keep the joints moving.
I will be sure to check and let you all know how I makes out after surgery. Thanks for the support.
Hi all it is now November and I am down 110 pounds. and the surgery has worked really well. I am scheduled to have my other hip replaced in March of 2014. Strangely I have been having a little pain in my new hip. It is not the same kind as prior to the surgery more a soreness than the sharp stabbing pains. I am going back to see the Ortho soon. My weight loss has slowed down but I still would like to lose another 40 pounds. I will keep you all up todate. Thanks for the support.
Why don't you try any joint replacements. there are no. of benefits are there please try this website: Joint replacements
OK...I have bad hips, but I plan on replacements. I have lost My weight and gotten healthier without WLS. My question is why rely on drugs for pain relief? Frankly, I was on Celebrex for 8 yrs and I looked at My neighbor and she is on dialysis; she looked soooo bad, and I asked Myself, "Are You losing this weight and becoming healthier just to lose your kidneys/liver/heart/stomach...because of the NSAIDS?!!! Sooo, I began RESEARCHING alternatives, and sure enough there is some goooood stuff out there that can beat NSAIDS hands down. Right now I have a "Program" of MSM, Boswellia, Curcumin, Omega 3; and Every Morning I start My day with FRESH JUICED (Anything) with Ginger Root in it and some Fresh Juiced Pineapple in it (whether all Fresh Juiced Fruit Juice or Green Smoothie or Combo), so basically Ginger Root and Bromilan, I just LIKE the taste of the Fresh Juiced Ginger Root and Pineapple. Now I have to convince My insurance company that this is wayyyyy better for Me than Celebrex and help Me out a little with costs. Maybe I'll have My PCP to Prescribe these supplements.
Anyway, try your own "****tail" of these supplements and give them at least 3-4 weeks to work. But I know for sure, NSAIDS only invite death to the party, and ALL of it only benefits the drug companies!!! RESEARCH, go to youtube, do YOU a Favor!

I did the pain management doc and the wonderful ganglion impar block too. I didn't see where it helped at all. My PCP did some more lab work and found some serious deficiencies now that we've been working on addressing them all the joint pain seems to be much more managebable. On a scale of 1 to 10 it's come down from an 8 to about a 2 (somedays a 3) but that's a huge improvement for me.
Blessed are the flexible for they shall not be bent out of shape.

i can have sympathy for your tail bone pain, mine too has gotten worse with each pound that i lose.you would think (or hope) that with each pound that you loss more of the aches and pains will go away. I gp to a pain management cent about ever 3/4 months for shots in my tail bone. Finally they did one in February that helped only to get hit with snow and ice here in Chicago and of course i had to be the one that slipped and fell landing rite on my tailbone. I thought that i was going to die the pain was so bad.I go back on April 9th for another shot hope this one helps.
Hi, I don't have any answers except to say that I've read a lot of conflicting information regarding the use of nsaids after having the sleeve. Apparently some doctors do allow it. I'm just completing my 6 month pre-surgery requirements by my insurance company, and expect to have surgery in late April or early May. Like you I have severe pain from both osteoarthritis and FM, as well as RA. I am not on any of the new treatments as my rheumatologist thought the risk was a bit high for me as I keep having recurring pneumonia. I take diclofenac with misoprostol 3 times a day, and also hydrocodon-acetametaphin 3 times a day and still can barely walk only a few steps due to pain. I weigh 300 and cannot have knee replacement until I lose weight. It's a Catch 22 for a lot of us, I suppose, but I am very worried about pain management post surgery as I can't imagine functioning at all without the NSAIDS. I'd appreciate any information you might have about this. Thank you.
Looks like I came to the right place. I had RNY 4 yrs ago and have lost 100 lbs and kept it off. I do however, have severe arthritis in my spine. Can't take nsaids or aspirin, I did for awhile but now have stomach ulcers. For 2 years I was taking Vicodin and it worked well for awhile but just talked to my doc yesterday to tell him it doesn't work anymore. He put me on MS Contin which is extended release. I told him since I have had RNY the extended release doesn't work very well. He said to just try it, well, guess what, it doesn't work at all. How do I get the message across to my doc that I can't take this???? Why don't they listen? Do you or do you know anyone that takes an opiate pain killer that works and do you know what it is? Any help will be appreciated! To all of us in the predicament, I feel your pain.
I also have RA and am taking injectable Methotrexate and plaquinel. I am currently in the process of getting my surgery but the plan is for me to get RNY.
The best thing to do is ask each doctor why they want you to have the specific procedure they want. I personally did a lot of research on all the procedures and almost immediately ruled out the band, so it came down to the sleeve and the RNY, one thing to really consider with RNY is the fact that you can no longer take NSAIDS. On all three surgeries you can take oral meds so that shouldn't be a problem that being said I think after you find out everything about the surgeries you should decide which one is right for you, don't be afraid to disagree with the surgeon or your Rheumatologist, speak up and advocate for yourself.
I had the sleeve and I am very happy with it!
I was diagnosed with RA in 2008, I began taking MTX pills and plaquenil back then. I stopped taking the meds a month before surgery per drs orders and was told to begin taking them a month after. I had surgery in November, since then I have only taken MTX once and that was the end of November, I only took it because I was beginning to feel stiff but i haven't taken it since. I still take plaquenil. I am losing weight and feel good, I believe my diet has helped me stay away from MTX. I pretty much have a gluten free diet!
