Topic: RE: Question on X-Ray
Donna...........if it's a soft tissue injury, damaged muscle, tendon, or ligament, it won't show on x-ray. At the very least I'd ask for an MRI. My FORMER pcp did an x-ray on my shoulder and said nothing was wrong. Having already had a rotator cuff tear on my right shoulder, I KNEW what was wrong and demanded an MRI. Guess what! I had surgry to repair the rotator cuff tear about two weeks later. Take responsibility for your own healthcare, my friend, you're the one that knows your body the best! Don't let them blow you off. Good luck.....Judy

Krista.............well it may not eliminate it ALL but it's amazing how much better you will be. Also weighing less has certainly allowed me to control my arthritis pain better with fewer meds and a much better attitude and tolerance. I had never heard of carpal tunnel "arthritis" but had carpal tunnel surgeries several years ago. I'm 60 and have had degenerative joint disease since my early 30s. I've also been overweight about that long, as well. Post wls, I now weigh 165 and am loving it! Good luck to you in your journey......................Judy

Topic: RE: Knee Replacement Questions
Hi Terri....... I have bilateral knee implants that are 12 and 15 years old. The 15 year old one was "revised" three years ago. The first one was both the hardest and best thing I had ever done! The surgery was tough, the recuperation and rehab hurts, but within a week I knew it had "worked" and that horrible bone-on-bone pain was gone. As soon as it was bad enough, I had the other one done. I waited way too long on the first one, and the second one was relatively a snap. I weighed almost 300 pounds and after wls am down to 165. I'm sure my first knee would have lasted a lot longer if I had known about wls way back then. Good luck to you. The most important thing I can say is do the rehab. It's not worth doing the surgery if you don't do the followup!.........Judy

Topic: RE: What arthtisis meds?
Kathy....my surgeon says NO NSAIDs after wls. I have taken Darvocet (not an NSAID) for many years for my pain and continue to take it after wls. My dose is down because my pain is less, but I just came out of a stabilizer boot for an ankle fusion (20 weeks ago!) and have been taking my Darvocet at the rate of 6 a day since surgery. It works for me. I think you have to find whatever works for you.....pain tolerance is very, very individual. NSAIDs like Ibuprofen, aspirin, Celebrex, Bextra, etc. increase our risk of ulceration and with out little pouches, most docs say don't take the chance. I do take a low-dose aspirin for heart health, on my doc's advice and monitoring. You need to have a good PCP who will listen to you and keep track of blood work and general health and who understands the wls process. Mine is excellent. PS both knees are artificial due to osteo and I've had numerous other bone surgeries due to the disease. It's mean, but I intend to get the best of it! Attitude certainly counts! Good luck to you.....Judy

Topic: Carpal Tunnel Arthritis
I was recently diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel Arthritis. I type alot at my job not knowing that my being overweight has also contributed to this problem. You learn something new every day. I have been suffering from this pain for about two years and just brushed it off as having Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. My doctor told me that alot of my problems that I'm having is weight related and that having the surgery will eliminate it all.

Topic: RA and open RNY
Hi all~ I see not too many people post here regularly but hopefully someone can give me their experience. I am about to have an open rny, in June. My rhuematologist and pcp have agreed that the surgery is OK for me. My rhuemmy did send specific instructions to the surgeon since I have been on prednisone for a portion of the last 12 months...I'm off now though. I currently take Enbrel and that's it. I had a bleeding ulcer with anaprox so I stopped taking that type of drug (motrin, vioxx, etc.) years ago. I was wondering if anyone else had the same cir****tance as me - ra with open rny. E-mail me if you do. Thanks Sandra

Hi, I take Enbrel and Methotrexate. I have Psoriatic Arthritis and Osteo. I can also take Ibuprofen if I need it in liquid form. Is there a difference in what kind of meds you can take depending upon what kind of WLS you had? I had Lap Band surgery 2 months ago. Good luck. Mel

you need to talk to your surgeon about which ones are appropriate. I had read that you can't take celebrex or bextra etc. I love bextra but surgeon i consulted said it can be used with caution. I also have heard other NSAIDS like ibuprofen etc are out, so guess it depends on the doc. I could not do without my bextra til I have the other knee done.
